At a glance

  • Riders must not serve a Long Lap Penalty while yellow flags or signals cover the penalty area. Extra compliance laps are added if those signals make the area unusable.
  • The normal completion windows are three laps for a single Long Lap and five for a double, with the yellow-signal extension described above. Counting starts at the first finish-line crossing after the dashboard message is sent.
  • Missing the single Long Lap deadline brings a double Long Lap or another Stewards’ penalty. Missing the double deadline brings a ride-through or another penalty.
  • Restart treatment depends on when the penalty was imposed and how many laps the race leader completed before the interruption.

A rider must not serve a MotoGP long lap penalty under yellow flags or signals covering the penalty area. If those signals make the area unusable, extra laps are added to the allowance for completing the penalty.

That is the rule in the 2026 FIM Grand Prix World Championship Regulations, updated 13 September 2026. The restriction concerns signals covering the penalty area; a yellow flag elsewhere on the circuit does not, by itself, establish that the Long Lap cannot be served.

The designated Long Lap route

The Long Lap follows a predefined route through an asphalt runoff area, with white lines marking either side. Teams must be notified of the route and its equivalent time penalty before the first practice session.

Notification clocks and the compliance window

Officials communicate an in-race penalty to the rider through dashboard signals and to the team through timekeeping and television monitors. The team may also display a physical sign board.

The compliance count starts at the rider’s first crossing of the finish line after the dashboard message has been sent. A single Long Lap ordinarily must be completed within three laps; a double requires both Long Laps within five laps.

Both windows are subject to extra compliance laps if yellow flags or signals covering the penalty area make it unusable. The provision does not specify a formula for calculating that extension.

Other yellow-flag obligations

Under yellow signals, riders must slow down and proceed cautiously. During a race, overtaking is forbidden until the point where a green flag is waved or displayed. See MotoGP’s official flag guide and the 2026 FIM flag provisions.

The FIM regulations include an exception for an overtaking mistake: if a rider realises immediately after overtaking that they committed an infringement, they must deliberately let the overtaken rider or riders pass. In that case, no penalty is imposed for the infringement.

Penalty escalation: from single detour to ride-through

The following checkpoints summarise the FIM’s 2026 Long Lap procedure.

Situation Requirement Consequence or qualification
SituationYellow flags or signals cover the penalty area RequirementDo not carry out the Long Lap. Consequence or qualificationExtra compliance laps are added if the area is unusable because of those signals.
SituationSingle Long Lap RequirementComplete it within the ordinary three-lap window, allowing for the conditional yellow-signal extension. Consequence or qualificationFailure brings a double Long Lap or another penalty chosen by the FIM MotoGP Stewards.
SituationDouble Long Lap RequirementComplete both within the ordinary five-lap window, allowing for the same conditional extension. Consequence or qualificationFailure brings a pit-lane ride-through or another Stewards’ penalty.

A ride-through requires the rider to travel through the pit lane while respecting its speed limit. Stopping is prohibited; the rider may then rejoin the race.

Route boundaries, safety and unserved penalties

Riders must stay within the lines defining the Long Lap route. Infractions may lead to the penalty being repeated or another sanction chosen by the Stewards. Overtaking within the route is forbidden, and the rider must leave and rejoin the track safely without disturbing or endangering others.

If the organisation has been unable to signal the Long Lap before the race ends, or decides not to, the rider receives an equivalent time penalty or another penalty decided by the Stewards.

What happens to a Long Lap after a restart?

If a Long Lap remains due after an interruption, the rider must serve it in the restarted race unless the Stewards impose another penalty, such as an equivalent time penalty. To check whether it remains due, distinguish pre-race penalties from offences during the race and use the race leader’s completed-lap count:

  • Three or more laps completed: pre-race Long Lap penalties already completed remain served; outstanding pre-race penalties carry forward to the restarted race. Start-position penalties are treated as served at the original start.
  • Fewer than three laps completed: the restart is a new race, so pre-race penalties, including start-position penalties, apply again. Penalties for offences committed during that interrupted race normally do not carry forward. However, the Stewards may specifically designate a penalty to be served in the restarted race where necessary.
