Kimi Antonelli became the youngest World Champion in Formula 1 history after finishing third in an extraordinary 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Max Verstappen took victory for Red Bull from fifth on the grid, resisting Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by less than a second. Antonelli's podium finish was sufficient to seal the Drivers' Championship, ending a 73-year wait for Italy dating back to Alberto Ascari's 1953 title triumph.
Breaking Records and Ending Italy's Drought
At 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli surpassed Sebastian Vettel's record as Formula 1's youngest World Champion, lowering the benchmark set when Vettel won the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at 23 years and 134 days old by more than three years. Antonelli also took his maiden title at a younger age than Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Verstappen. The triumph marks Mercedes' first Drivers' Championship since 2020 and rewards Toto Wolff's decision to promote the youngster directly into Hamilton's former seat. Antonelli arrived in Mexico needing only ninth place to secure the title regardless of his rivals' results, built upon nine Grand Prix victories in Shanghai, Suzuka, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Spa, Monza, Madrid, and Austin. Following the race, Antonelli admitted he was still struggling to process the achievement, saying: "We did it! And I wouldn't be here without Mercedes and without my family."
Opening-Lap Drama and Ferrari Confrontation
Hamilton started from pole position after ending a 1,197-day drought by edging George Russell by 0.009 seconds, having previously secured his maiden Ferrari pole position. Although Hamilton made a strong launch, Charles Leclerc attacked towards Turn 1 before both Ferrari drivers ran beyond the circuit boundaries at Turn 4. Hamilton lost momentum and allowed Verstappen through, while Leclerc cut across the grass to take the lead. Stewards subsequently issued Leclerc a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Further back, Russell dropped down the order before colliding with Isack Hadjar, sending the Red Bull into a spin and receiving a ten-second penalty, while both Aston Martins retired early with abnormal pressure levels in their power unit systems, prompting a brief Virtual Safety Car.
Verstappen Gains Upper Hand Through Strategy
Verstappen was the sole leading contender to begin the race on medium tyres, preserving the faster soft compound for his second stint. Leclerc initially appeared capable of neutralising his five-second penalty, gradually extending his advantage over Verstappen beyond five seconds, but both stopped on lap 28. Red Bull executed its stop efficiently, allowing Verstappen to emerge ahead of Leclerc and take control of the effective race lead. Hamilton pitted one lap later for mediums, rejoining behind Leclerc. Mercedes extended Antonelli's opening stint on soft tyres until lap 44, briefly inheriting the lead before his 4.3-second pit stop dropped him to fourth.
Red Flag and Decisive Pass
On lap 46, Valtteri Bottas crashed heavily at Turn 1 after replays suggested a potential front suspension failure on the Cadillac. Bottas was taken to the Medical Centre for precautionary checks and subsequently released, but the incident prompted a Safety Car and a red flag. A second standing start with 24 laps remaining saw Verstappen maintain the lead despite contact with Hamilton at Turn 1. Behind them, a heavy lock-up left Leclerc with a severe flat spot, allowing Antonelli to execute a decisive overtake into Turn 1 on the following lap to claim third.
Safety Car Restart and Sprint Finish
Another interruption occurred on lap 59 when Oscar Piastri collided with rookie Arvid Lindblad at Turn 2, sending Lindblad into the barriers and leaving five drivers classified as retirements alongside Bottas, Oliver Bearman, and both Aston Martins. Following a Safety Car period, racing resumed on lap 63 for an eight-lap sprint. Although power unit and brake temperatures rose in the thin air, Verstappen held off Hamilton to take victory by 0.799 seconds. Leclerc defended fourth from Lando Norris despite tyre degradation, while Russell finished sixth ahead of Piastri and Franco Colapinto. Liam Lawson recovered from a pit-lane start caused by a qualifying MGU-K technical infringement to finish ninth, followed by Pierre Gasly in tenth.
Twelve Titles on the Rostrum
Verstappen's triumph marked his 74th career Grand Prix win. After the race, Hamilton and Verstappen embraced the newly crowned champion before joining him on the podium, where they lifted Antonelli onto their shoulders. Between them, Hamilton, Verstappen and Antonelli represented twelve Formula 1 World Championships: seven for Hamilton, four for Verstappen and one for Antonelli, celebrating the 20-year-old Italian becoming the sport's youngest champion.
