Andrea Kimi Antonelli's world championship title triumph contrasted with another weekend in which Ferrari encountered difficulties with Charles Leclerc, prompting Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to openly criticise spoiled drivers and tireless radio complainers. Wolff believes the achievement of his young competitor should serve as an example to them.
Antonelli Secures Title in Second Season
Antonelli concluded the Mexico Grand Prix by securing 3ª position, achieving a result more than sufficient to decide the drivers' title with four rounds to spare. Competing in his second year in Formula 1, the driver became the youngest champion in history of the championship.
Recovery Following 2025 Campaign
The title victory arrived after a complicated 2025 campaign for Antonelli, who subsequently found his footing and seized the opportunity to contest the championship. Following the Formula 1 summer break, it had become clear that the competitor would emerge as champion, leaving unresolved only when he would be declared champion.
Criticism of Ruthless Racing Approach
In an interview at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez after the race, Wolff commended Antonelli's maturity and took the opportunity to offer an appraisal of other competitors he observes on the grid. Wolff revealed that he had discussed driver behaviour directly with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, criticizing the mentality of winning at any cost. Describing that approach as selfish, opportunistic, and ruthless in pursuit of self-interest, Wolff declared that this model of racing driver has died, replaced by a champion representing values of humility, integrity, loyalty, and respect.
Conduct in Junior Categories and Formula 1
Wolff explained that Antonelli should serve as an example to many other young drivers in junior categories, as well as to the privileged few in Formula 1—the endless radio complainers, those who whine, and those who crash. Telling observers to look at this 20-year-old kid and think about what can be done to make him better, Wolff stated that this is modern Formula 1 and that Kimi represents the modern Formula 1 driver because of these values.
Integrity and Future Outlook With Mercedes
Addressing the wider paddock, Wolff observed that natural driving talent is present in everyone, but stressed that one also needs to remain a good human being. He argued that Antonelli demonstrated it is entirely possible to beat anyone while staying decent. Wolff added that he trusts Antonelli can deliver even grander achievements for Mercedes in future campaigns, maintaining that if the squad supplies him with the car, the driver will remain in contention for further crowns after securing his first today.
