Aspar Secures One-Two Finish at Sepang
David Alonso took victory in the Moto2 Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit, leading an emphatic performance that saw the Aspar riders leave their rivals trailing. Daniel Holgado launched flawlessly from pole position to head the field into the opening corners. Behind him, Alonso mounted an aggressive challenge against Izan Guevara and Ángel Piqueras, quickly settling behind Holgado by the second lap.
Alonso Survives Late Error at Turn 16
Alonso wasted no time overtaking Holgado to surge ahead, opening a commanding lead at the front that seemed unassailable. That advantage came under sudden threat with just three laps remaining after a costly mistake at turn 16 nearly cost Alonso the win. The error allowed Holgado to close the gap and reignited tension within the Aspar garage, recalling the earlier collision between the two teammates in Indonesia. Despite the late pressure, Alonso regained his composure and crossed the finish line first, securing his first Moto2 win since his triumph at Assen in June.
González Recovers to Fourth in Title Fight
Further down the order, Manuel González produced an impressive recovery ride, rising from ninth on the grid to secure fourth place. Following a cautious getaway that initially placed him seventh, González passed Daniel Muñoz by lap three and overtook Alonso López on the following lap to move into fifth. He then locked horns with title rival Izan Guevara, who had already pulled away to join the front runners. Although González closed in slightly near the end of the race, Guevara maintained a safe distance from the podium contenders.
Piqueras Takes Final Podium Spot as Title Race Compresses
Ángel Piqueras capitalized on the battle ahead to clinch the final podium spot, denying Guevara a third consecutive victory. The result tightens the championship battle, leaving Guevara trailing González by just 3.5 points with only three rounds remaining in the season. Lower down the order, Barry Baltus endured a difficult start in 20th place and fell to 25th in the early stages, but demonstrated resilience by capitalizing on race incidents and executing strategic overtakes to finish 17th.
Aspar Team Displays Dominant Malaysian Pace
The race highlighted the Aspar team's dominance at Sepang, where Alonso's victory and Holgado's persistent pressure emphasized their superior pace and collective team strength. With the championship intensifying and only three rounds left to contest, the continuing clash between González and Guevara promises to define the concluding stages of the Moto2 season.
