Formula E Across the United States
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has contested at least one round in the United States across eleven of its opening twelve seasons. American rounds have spanned purpose-built temporary street courses, urban waterfronts, established speedways, and permanent road courses. Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, is scheduled to become the seventh American circuit to host the championship in 2027.
Biscayne Bay: Miami's 2015 Downtown Debut
Formula E first visited America during its inaugural 2014–15 season, staging an event on the East Coast at Biscayne Bay in downtown Miami. The 1.3-mile temporary street circuit wrapped around the home arena of the Miami Heat NBA franchise.
Jean-Éric Vergne captured pole position by 0.05 seconds and fought Sam Bird during the early laps before both drivers suffered setbacks. Daniel Abt subsequently developed powertrain problems while contending for the lead. Nico Prost maintained composure against debuting home driver Scott Speed to take his first series victory. Biscayne Bay hosted only that single race.
Long Beach: California Street Racing
Weeks after the Miami opener, the championship shifted across the country to California. The Long Beach Street Circuit, an established venue in American motorsport history, staged rounds in both season one and season two.
Prost and Abt locked out the front row in 2015, but Nelson Piquet Jr. took the lead off the start line. Piquet held off Vergne, Lucas di Grassi, and Sébastien Buemi to win his maiden Formula E race, thirty-five years after his father earned his first Formula One triumph at the same circuit.
Lucas di Grassi rebounded at Long Beach one year later. After suffering a disqualification at the previous round in Mexico, the Brazilian secured victory on the California streets to lead Buemi in the Drivers' Championship standings by one point.
Brooklyn Street Circuit: New York Double-Headers
New York City joined the calendar in season three, hosting double-header rounds at the Brooklyn Street Circuit from 2017 through 2022, pausing only during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The technical layout ran against the Manhattan and Jersey City waterfronts.
Debuting driver Alex Lynn claimed pole position for the first Brooklyn race before retiring, allowing Sam Bird to secure the win. The following day, debutant Pierre Gasly was able to hold position and scramble across the finish line in fourth place despite crashing on the last corner, while Bird swept both weekend races.
Brooklyn twice crowned Jean-Éric Vergne as champion. In 2018, Vergne overcame exclusion from qualifying to finish fifth on Bastille Day, sealing the title before winning the final GEN1 race. One year later, a collision with Felipe Massa sent the fight to Sunday, where seventh place secured his consecutive crown.
The 2022 visit delivered extreme conditions. Heavy rain triggered a multi-car aquaplaning incident into the barriers, bringing out red flags and awarding Nick Cassidy his maiden series win from inside the tyre wall. The next day, António Félix da Costa led lights-to-flag from pole ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne.
Portland International Raceway: Permanent Road Course Racing
With the introduction of the GEN3 machinery in season nine, the American round relocated to Portland International Raceway in Oregon. The wide permanent road course generated high-speed pack racing that placed extreme demands on slipstreaming tactics and energy conservation.
Nick Cassidy won Portland's inaugural race in 2023, charging from tenth on the grid to defeat polesitter Jake Dennis. The event transitioned to a double-header in 2024, where António Félix da Costa dominated both encounters against Robin Frijns to complete a sweep of the weekend.
Homestead-Miami Speedway: The GEN3 Evo Transition
Formula E returned to Florida for the 2024–25 campaign with the upgraded GEN3 Evo car. Homestead-Miami Speedway, an established oval and road complex known for hosting the NASCAR Cup Series finale, provided a one-off stop for the championship.
The race ended under red-flag conditions while Norman Nato was leading on track. Nato and several rivals had failed to activate their full mandatory ATTACK MODE allotment before the stoppage occurred. The resulting penalties promoted Pascal Wehrlein to the victory.
Miami International Autodrome and Circuit of the Americas
The series moved to the Miami International Autodrome at the Miami Dolphins stadium complex for season twelve, making it the third separate Florida venue in championship history. Rain created damp running for the track debut, where Nico Müller secured his first series pole position.
Mitch Evans started ninth on the 1.4-mile circuit, overtook Müller with a switchback maneuver, and took the victory. The venue had previously hosted the 2025 Formula E EVO Sessions for guest drivers testing GEN3 equipment.
Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, is slated to join the calendar in 2027 to mark the start of the GEN4 regulations. The undulating venue already holds rounds for Formula 1, MotoGP, WEC, IMSA, and NASCAR.
The planned Austin race will form the initial leg of an American double-bill alongside the Miami International Autodrome. That pairing extends Formula E's ongoing technical presence across United States motorsport facilities.
