Historic rivalries across Grand Prix eras

Marc Marquez has competed alongside several of MotoGP's most celebrated competitors throughout his career, notably Valentino Rossi, three-time premier-class champion Jorge Lorenzo, and Dani Pedrosa, widely regarded as the finest rider never to claim a world title. Yet during an interview with Motosprint, the current Ducati rider was asked to look across motorcycle racing history and identify iconic figures from past eras he would have relished the opportunity to challenge.

Hypothetical duel with Casey Stoner

When examining more recent campaigns, Marquez singled out two-time world champion Casey Stoner as a primary hypothetical rival. Marquez entered the premier class in 2013 as Stoner's successor at Honda, following the Australian's abrupt retirement at age 27 brought on by physical and mental fatigue. While their unrealised contest remains one of Grand Prix racing's greatest unanswered what-ifs, Marquez highlighted their strong personal rapport, humorously recalling how the pair shared office space to change clothes during World Ducati Week. Assessing how such a duel might have unfolded, former team boss Lucio Cecchinello previously suggested that Stoner would have initially defeated Marquez before ultimately falling behind over time.

Doubts against Mick Doohan's dominant era

Looking further back into the sport's archives, Marquez identified another Australian icon in Mick Doohan, whose peak reign proved untouchable across five consecutive title-winning campaigns between 1994 and 1998. Marquez explained that while he would welcome a fight against Stoner, facing Doohan presented an entirely different proposition. Reflecting on the champions he witnessed with his own eyes, the Spaniard admitted he was uncertain whether he could conquer Doohan's unbroken sequence of five straight crowns. Marquez, who was contracted to ride for Honda in 2024 prior to cancelling his deal to join Gresini Racing, conceded genuine doubt about besting the 1990s pacesetter.

Shared adversity and career recovery

Beyond their respective achievements, Marquez and Doohan share a striking parallel in overcoming catastrophic, career-threatening adversity. Doohan nearly suffered a leg amputation following a severe crash at Assen in 1992, whereas Marquez required four surgical operations spanning three seasons after breaking his arm in 2020. The Australian legend revealed last year that he spoke with Marquez several times during that grueling rehabilitation period to share his unique perspective on recovery. Statistically, the MotoGP Hall of Fame inductee ranks fourth all-time in premier-class victories with 54, fifth in podium finishes with 95, and second in pole positions with 58, trailing only Marquez himself.

Sources: Marc Marquez ‘not sure’ he could ‘challenge’ one MotoGP legend he never raced against.
