Uncovering Seven Decades of Formula 1 Rivalries

Veteran motorsport journalist Tony Dodgins has chronicled the intense psychological battles and intra-team friction defining Grand Prix history in his newly translated book, Formula 1. Rivals. Legendary duels of the greatest drivers, released in Polish through publishing house Familium. Drawing upon more than three decades reporting from inside the paddock, Dodgins examines how relentless sporting ambition frequently transformed into personal obsession as competitors contested world championships wheel-to-wheel. The work traces the evolution of pinnacle racing from the inauguration of the World Championship in 1950, taking readers behind the scenes into garages and pit lanes where pivotal title decisions were brokered and track rivalries occasionally spiralled beyond control.

Mark Webber on Teammates as the Ultimate Measuring Stick

Nine-time Grand Prix winner Mark Webber, who partnered Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull Racing across several fraught campaigns, authored the foreword exploring teammate psychology. Webber noted that while competing against rival outfits was customary, the driver across the garage remained each racer's ultimate measuring stick. Webber explained that your counterpart often felt like a deadly enemy rather than a comrade, prompting drivers to immediately dissect each other's sector times and driving techniques. Although Webber recalled memorable on-track scraps against champions including Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and Jenson Button, he emphasised that intra-squad parity rendered garage relations uniquely demanding.

From Early Gentlemen's Agreements to Modern Corporate Pressures

The volume covers seven decades of competition, contrasting the sport's opening eras—defined by barrier-free circuits and gentlemanly conduct—against modern commercial realities driven by corporate funding, engineering data, and sponsor pressures. Dodgins profiles legendary pairings across generations, detailing Juan Manuel Fangio against Alberto Ascari, Stirling Moss versus Mike Hawthorn, Jim Clark against John Surtees, and Jackie Stewart versus Jochen Rindt. The book explores bitter clashes including Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at McLaren, James Hunt against Niki Lauda, Nigel Mansell opposing Nelson Piquet, and the fierce title fight between Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill, alongside modern duels featuring Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, and Max Verstappen.

Curated Archival Imagery of Unseen Paddock Moments

Presented in a large-format hardcover edition spanning 240 pages, the retrospective incorporates more than 200 agency and archival images. Curated visuals capture moments often obscured during television broadcasts, highlighting immediate podium emotions, heated pit-lane conversations, drivers focusing on the starting grid, and heavily damaged machinery following high-speed barrier impacts.

Tony Dodgins: A Four-Decade Perspective from the Paddock

Dodgins launched his specialist motorsport reporting career after earning the Sir William Lyons Award in 1979 for an interview conducted with Frank Williams at Silverstone, staged one day prior to the Williams team celebrating its maiden Grand Prix triumph. He subsequently joined Autosport in 1985, later leading Grand Prix coverage at Motoring News, On Track, and F1 Racing, while contributing columns to Autosport's Japanese edition for two decades. Operating as an independent correspondent since 1992, Dodgins regularly writes for Motorsport News, edits the Autocourse annual published continuously since 1950, and serves as a television race analyst alongside Alex Jacques on Channel 4.
