Cybersecurity Alert for Mexico Grand Prix

The Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City, acting through its Cyber Police division, has warned Formula 1 spectators against a wave of fraudulent online sales emerging ahead of the 2026 Mexico Grand Prix. According to metropolitan law enforcement, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the high commercial demand surrounding the world championship event by advertising bogus race tickets, hotel bookings, tour packages, and travel arrangements. These deceptive listings are actively distributed across social media networks, unofficial websites, and digital marketplace platforms, using discounted prices and purported last-minute deals to attract prospective attendees.

Deceptive Ticket Listings and Online Tactics

Investigators explained that the illicit schemes depend heavily on convincing visual materials to create a false sense of legitimacy. Scammers routinely publish photographs of passes, seat reservations, hotel suites, flight itineraries, and fabricated payment receipts. In various instances, operators establish misleading profiles displaying authentic names, stolen imagery from official event channels, and credible background details to prevent buyers from detecting the deception. When marketing admission, sellers offer passes at prices well below regular market figures or claim to hold urgent leftover tickets, directing interested buyers to transfer bank deposits to secure their reservation. After receiving payments, perpetrators frequently break off all communication or distribute invalid access credentials, including duplicate, forged, or previously used tickets.

Accommodation and Travel Package Schemes

Fraudulent activity similarly targets lodging in the vicinity of the venue, where advertisements promote hotel rooms or nearby residential properties at preferential rates. Victims are instructed to submit advance payments to confirm their bookings, only to find the seller unresponsive and the accommodation nonexistent once the money has been sent. A complementary scheme features fabricated travel agencies promoting all-inclusive packages that claim to bundle grand prix tickets, accommodation, local transfers, and auxiliary services. Organisers of these offers appropriate corporate logos, images, and company data from legitimate businesses to gain consumer trust, but customers discover after paying that no reservations were ever booked. In addition, cybercriminals advertise flights, intercity bus journeys, and private ground transportation to Mexico City, requesting personal banking credentials and advance deposits before vanishing or providing forged travel vouchers.

Cyber Police Protective Guidelines

To mitigate the risk of fraud, the Cyber Police released protective guidelines urging supporters to purchase Formula 1 tickets solely through official event channels or verified distributors. Attendees are advised to ensure lodging offers match genuine establishments by using recognised reservation platforms, verify the corporate standing and authenticity of travel agencies before initiating payments, and cross-check travel itineraries directly with transport providers and airlines. The authority also warns against completing wire transfers to accounts held by unverified individuals and cautions fans to treat abnormally cheap deals, last-minute bargains, and high-pressure sales tactics with scepticism.

Data Protection and Reporting Helplines

The police unit further advised users never to disclose confidential banking data, security codes, official identifications, or account passwords. In the event of suspected fraud, victims are encouraged to retain digital evidence, including message logs, profile details, payment slips, and screenshots. The Cyber Police division maintains around-the-clock public support twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, handling inquiries through designated telephone helplines, official email correspondence, and verified municipal social media accounts.
