Executive Appointment at Audi Formula Racing
German automotive manufacturer Audi has announced the appointment of Thomas Fuhr as the new chief executive officer of Audi Formula Racing GmbH, confirming the management change on Wednesday morning. Fuhr is scheduled to formally take up his new duties on Sunday, arriving as the outfit seeks to advance its ambitious Formula 1 program. Audi has collected 23 points across its debut world championship campaign, and the new executive is expected to help ensure that tally increases significantly over the coming years.
Powertrain Development and Dual-Facility Structure
Audi Formula Racing GmbH was established in 2022, four years ahead of the team's official entry into Formula 1. The entity is responsible for the design, development, and manufacturing of the car's complete powertrain, encompassing the hybrid system and the gearbox. Under the project's dual-site configuration, the race team itself operates from its base in Hinwil, Switzerland, while the Formula 1 car's propulsion system is engineered and built at Audi's specialized facility in Neuburg.
Fuhr's Experience and Strategic Priorities
Fuhr brings prior top-tier grand prix engine leadership to the role, having served as managing director at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains from 2009 to 2012. Remarking on his arrival, Fuhr stated that he is "proud to join the Audi Formula 1 project" and called the opportunity to contribute to shaping the marque's future in motorsport an "exciting" prospect. He explained that the crew in Neuburg has already developed and tested an entirely new power unit, adding that his priority will be to build upon that foundation by uniting expertise across the broader organization and establishing the operational conditions required to race at the highest level. Fuhr also indicated that he looks forward to working directly with Mattia, Christian, Stefan, and the remainder of the team.
Restructuring Technical and Operational Roles
Fuhr's appointment forms part of a wider reorganization of operational responsibilities across the German manufacturer's Formula 1 leadership. With Fuhr assuming the chief executive position at Audi Formula Racing GmbH, technical director Stefan Dreyer will now concentrate entirely on the direct development of the Formula 1 power unit. In parallel, Christian Foyer retains responsibility for site operations at the Neuburg facility, while 56-year-old Mattia Binotto remains in place as team principal overseeing the wider racing outfit.
