Marc Marquez established the benchmark pace at the 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix, taking the top spot on the timesheets during Free Practice 1 at the Sepang International Circuit. While the reigning world champion looked immediately dialled in from his opening laps aboard the Ducati GP26, title rival Jorge Martin endured a troubled start to the race weekend, placing 20th overall while attempting to ride through a wrist injury.
Substantial attention focused on Martin during the opening portion of the one-hour session as the Spaniard returned to action less than seven days after fracturing his wrist in the Phillip Island Sprint. Despite demonstrating notable bravery, the early lap times underlined the physical difficulties confronting the championship challenger. By the halfway mark of FP1, Martin circulated roughly four seconds adrift of the leading pace, whereas teammate Marco Bezzecchi ran near the sharp end in second position.
Marquez assumed control on the timing monitors following the field's initial efforts and refused to give up the position. His early benchmark of 1:58.912 remained at the summit of the classification for the majority of the first 45 minutes and went unchallenged throughout the remainder of the session. That consistent form earned Marquez the fastest time of the morning heading into the scheduled pre-qualifying practice session later in the afternoon.
The session was red-flagged with ten minutes remaining following an unusual incident involving Gresini replacement rider Iker Lecuona. The Spaniard's Ducati prototype lost a chunk of bodywork under heavy braking into Turn 15, forcing race control to halt the action. Following a brief delay to clear the circuit, motorcycles returned to the track, after which Trackhouse confirmed that Raul Fernandez had been ruled unfit for the remainder of the event. Fernandez suffered discomfort during his opening laps, with fractured fingers continuing to hinder his ability to manage a MotoGP prototype.
In the closing minutes of running, Brad Binder jumped up the order, posting a time that temporarily elevated the South African to fourth on the timesheets behind Marquez, Bezzecchi, and Pedro Acosta. Shortly thereafter, Enea Bastianini bettered Binder's mark to claim P4, rounding out a 3-4-5 sweep for the KTM stable. Franco Morbidelli and Alex Marquez took sixth and seventh respectively, while Johann Zarco completed the top eight.
