What Did Audi’s Sauber Takeover Change?

The ownership announcement clarified the intended structure; it did not prove a performance gain.

At a glance
What changed when Audi announced a complete takeover of Sauber in March 2024? It moved the planned 2026 entry from a manufacturer working with a strategic partner toward full ownership of the Swiss group, while keeping the operation’s two-site structure: power-unit work in Neuburg, Germany, and chassis and race-team operations in Hinwil, Switzerland. The announcement was a corporate milestone, not a claim about on-track performance.

What did the 2024 announcement actually say?

On 8 March 2024 Audi said the supervisory boards of AUDI AG and Volkswagen AG had approved a complete takeover of the Sauber Group. The wording matters. In October 2022, Audi had announced Sauber as its strategic partner and said it planned to acquire a stake. The March 2024 update specified the intended end point: Audi planned to acquire 100 per cent of the group’s shares. It did not publish the purchase price, individual share-transfer schedule or a valuation, so those should not be supplied from rumor.

Publicly dated milestones in the Audi–Sauber factory-team plan
Date Announcement What it establishes
26 Aug 2022 Audi announced a Formula 1 entry from 2026 Manufacturer entry target
26 Oct 2022 Sauber named strategic partner Planned stake; no percentage specified in release
8 Mar 2024 Boards approved full takeover plan Planned 100% acquisition of Sauber Group
23 Jul 2024 Mattia Binotto appointed to lead the project COO/CTO role at Sauber Motorsport AG
1 Aug 2024 Jonathan Wheatley announced as future team principal Planned management structure for the Audi team

Why keep the sites distinct?

Audi described three connected parts of the program: its investment in Sauber, power-unit development by Audi Formula Racing GmbH in Neuburg, and strategic coordination by AUDI AG. The Sauber racing operation was based in Hinwil. This split lets the story be read as an integration project rather than a simple rename: a factory team requires a racing organization, a power unit and a management structure to work together.

The July 2024 leadership announcement added detail. Binotto, previously Ferrari’s team principal, was appointed Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer of Sauber Motorsport AG from 1 August. Audi said Andreas Seidl would leave his CEO role; the project would be reorganized under the new structure. On 1 August Audi separately announced Jonathan Wheatley as team principal, with the release saying he would join by July 2025 at the latest. These dated plans should not be rewritten as if all roles began on announcement day.

What can an announcement tell a reader?

It can establish intended ownership, entry timing, organizational responsibilities and named appointments. It cannot confirm that the acquisition has improved lap time, reliability or results. Nor does a 100 per cent planned stake mean every asset, employee or technical decision immediately changes hands. The public releases describe corporate intent; race performance must be assessed from later results and technical evidence.

Sources and method

At the March 2024 announcement, the 100 per cent stake was a planned end state. Audi’s 2022 entry and partnership announcements and the 2024 update mark different stages; the March statement should not be read as proof that the acquisition closed that day.

The cited public releases did not state a purchase price or a detailed closing schedule. Those omissions limit what the announcement can establish about the transaction’s financial terms and timing.
