Unexpected Saturday Withdrawal

Esteban Ocon was removed from his Haas cockpit ahead of Saturday running at the Mexico City Grand Prix. While it had been known for some time that the French driver would leave the American outfit at the conclusion of the 2026 season—with Ferrari-nurtured Formula 2 talent Rafael Camara signed to replace him for 2027—few would have expected Ocon to be taken out of the car by Saturday in Mexico. The American squad announced that reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa, a Le Mans winner and two-time World Endurance Championship title holder, took over driving duties for the third free practice session and qualifying.

Disagreement Over Practice Programme

Haas did not comment on the reason for Ocon's removal from the car. In the Mexican paddock, talk centered on events during Friday's second practice session, where an argument regarding the run programme reportedly escalated after the on-track running concluded. Ocon had heated arguments with both his race engineer, Laura Mueller, and team principal Ayao Komatsu. French publication L’Equipe went so far as to suggest in its report that the confrontation might have escalated to physical violence.

Social Media Statement

Following the claims concerning physical violence, Ocon addressed the situation directly through social media on October 31. The one-time Grand Prix winner addressed media reports and speculation surrounding Haas's decision confirming that he would take no further part in the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. Ocon acknowledged that a difference in viewpoints on Friday evening had indeed turned into a dispute between the parties involved. However, he firmly denied any reports claiming that anyone had resorted to physical violence in attempting to resolve the disagreement.

Condemnation of Violence

Emphasizing his view on conduct, Ocon stated that he strongly condemns all forms of violence, conveying his conviction that differences should always be resolved professionally, with respect and mutual understanding. He added that further information would be shared at an appropriate time.
