FIA Reportedly Rejects Trophy Request for Mexico
The FIA has reportedly rejected a request from Formula 1 to present Kimi Antonelli with the World Championship trophy in Mexico, leaving the prize stored until December. According to reporting from Sport Bild, commercial managers from Formula 1 sought an exemption from the FIA ahead of Sunday, November 1, at the Mexican Grand Prix. The request was not necessarily about handing over the trophy to Antonelli, but simply allowing its use during photo shoots intended to capture a potential crowning in Mexico. However, the FIA did not wish to modify its protocol and refused the request, meaning the genuine object will remain stored until December 12.
FIA Prize-Giving Protocol and Tradition
The drivers' world championship trophy is scheduled to be presented during the FIA's annual awards ceremony on December 12 in Shanghai, six days after the season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. For years, Formula 1 champions have received their world trophy at the end-of-season ceremony rather than at the exact moment of their crowning. FOM attempted to bypass this custom for an event that could leave a lasting mark on the sport. The decision reflects different priorities between the two major institutions: FOM sought to capitalise on a unique moment, create striking images, and extend sporting emotion, while the FIA chose to preserve its prerogatives and the ceremonial traditions surrounding its championships.
Alternative Celebrations at Hermanos Rodríguez
In the absence of the real trophy, organisers have reportedly found an alternative solution in an image. If Antonelli becomes champion on Sunday, a digital reproduction of the cup is expected to appear on the LED screens surrounding the podium at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The Mercedes driver would also receive a special on-stage interview, allowing him to celebrate his title, share his emotion with spectators, and pose in front of a virtual cup. However, lifting the actual trophy will require patience. If Antonelli wins the Grand Prix itself, he will receive the standard race winner's trophy on the podium, with only the world championship trophy remaining out of reach.
Championship Permutations in Mexico
The sporting situation remains clear. With 365 points in the championship, Antonelli holds an advantage of 123 lengths over his teammate George Russell and 124 over Lewis Hamilton. Only those two drivers can still mathematically deny him the title. A ninth-place finish on Sunday will therefore be enough for the young Italian to become champion, regardless of how his rivals perform.
Historic Milestones on the Line
At 20 years old, Antonelli would break a sixteen-year-old record for precocity held since 2010 by Sebastian Vettel, who was crowned at 23 years and 134 days. That outcome would represent a historic milestone for Mercedes, for Italy, and for Formula 1 as it embraces its newest phenomenon. For Italy, it would mean celebrating a champion it has awaited since Alberto Ascari in 1953. However, even if Antonelli conquers motorsport's most demanding championship on the track, the world championship trophy is not packed for the trip, leaving him to wait before he is permitted to touch or lift the silverware.
