Championship Permutations in Mexico
Kimi Antonelli has admitted feeling more tense than normal ahead of the Mexico Grand Prix, where he has the opportunity to become the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. The Mercedes driver needs to finish among the top nine to secure the title, even if his teammate, George Russell, wins the race. That points equation leaves his championship fate entirely in his own hands, ensuring that a finish among the top nine will seal the title regardless of Russell's result. While preparing for the race that could mark his trajectory in the sport, Antonelli acknowledged that the weight of the opportunity has already begun to affect his emotional state.
Starting Position at Hermanos Rodríguez
The Italian will start from fourth position on the grid at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez after setting the fifth-fastest time during the qualifying session. He gained one place on the grid following the application of a one-place penalty to Max Verstappen, who had finished ahead of him. When the Grand Prix gets underway, Antonelli will line up behind pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton, Russell, and Charles Leclerc. Even though qualifying did not conclude as he had hoped, starting from fourth maintains his championship opportunity, with earlier context covered as Antonelli nears the title in Mexico.
Physical Condition and Emotional Pressure
When questioned about how he would manage expectations before a race of such significance to his career, Antonelli revealed that he does not feel completely recovered during the race weekend. He explained that it had not been the easiest weekend and noted that he was definitely not yet feeling at 100 percent. Antonelli added that thoughts regarding what could happen were also present, leaving him feeling distinctly more tense than usual and not as calm, though he intended to get a good night of sleep before focusing on tomorrow's race.
Qualifying Difficulties in Q3
The qualifying session also failed to deliver what Antonelli had anticipated. The young driver admitted that he struggled to find good feeling from the tyres during Q3 and acknowledged lacking confidence on track. He conceded that tension played a role in an untidy lap where he committed several errors throughout the decisive run. Despite that difficult session, Antonelli emphasized that starting fourth keeps his title hopes intact, concluding that “it is still P4 and there is a lot at stake.”
