Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff maintains that George Russell has what it takes to become a Formula 1 world champion in the future, even though Russell's championship aspirations for the 2026 campaign are over. Russell began the season positively with a victory in Melbourne, but a combination of bad luck and a brilliant young teammate ended his title pursuit with several races remaining on the calendar.
Russell's prospects may also have been hindered early in the year when complaints regarding lift and coast energy harvesting prompted the FIA to alter its direction. Following the United States Grand Prix, Wolff explained via Motorsport Tech columnist Adam Cooper that an update placed on the car remains "difficult to operate." Wolff highlighted that Russell has struggled specifically because the car's operating window is exceptionally challenging.
According to Wolff, Mercedes sees clear variability in results across the campaign. Whenever the squad configures the car to suit Russell, the British driver is fast, but when track behavior drops outside that operational window, he struggles more than teammate Kimi Antonelli. Wolff stated that working out how such a performance difference occurs is on the team, questioning what Russell dislikes and what Mercedes needs to do to modify the car or set it up differently so he can go fast, while firmly rejecting any suggestion that Russell is three-tenths or half a second slower than Antonelli and praising Russell's intelligence, ability, and determination.
Russell's broader competitive record reinforces that standing, having secured eight grand prix victories between 2022 and the 2026 championship. Across his three seasons alongside seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, head-to-head metrics show the two drivers even in races, with Russell outqualifying Hamilton by ten occasions.
With Antonelli poised to secure his first world title at the upcoming event in Mexico, outside figures including Helmut Marko have suggested Russell might never become a world champion. In response, Wolff rebuffed Marko's doubts over Russell's future as Antonelli nears the title, stating that the Red Bull advisor is wrong about Russell's credentials. While acknowledging that enduring a season expected to be one's own while a teammate thrives is difficult to handle, Wolff reiterated that if Mercedes provides Russell with a quick car in a new season, he has what is needed to win a championship.
