Formula 1's Youngest World Champions

Kimi Antonelli created Formula 1 history by securing the drivers' world championship during his second season competing in the sport. That achievement established him as the youngest world champion ever to race in the global championship, altering the sport's historical record books.

The Italian competitor's milestone invites a direct historical comparison against earlier standards across Grand Prix racing. Champions who previously reached the pinnacle of the category at youthful ages include Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris.

1. Kimi Antonelli

Antonelli captured his maiden Formula 1 world title in 2026 at the age of 20 years and 68 days. The Italian driver secured that crowning triumph during what represented a true coming-of-age campaign in just his second year racing in the world championship.

The 2026 calendar delivered several historic records for Antonelli. He became the youngest-ever pole sitter, the youngest driver to lead the world championship standings, and the youngest competitor to reach five Grand Prix victories. Antonelli additionally ended a 73-year drought of Italian champions on his way to setting a new benchmark, breaking Sebastian Vettel's record that had stood for 16 years.

2. Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel won his first Formula 1 world title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days of age. The German racer held the distinction of being the youngest world champion from that 2010 triumph until Antonelli took the crown in 2026.

Vettel secured the 2010 championship by overcoming a 15-point deficit to Fernando Alonso at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix showdown. Taking his fifth victory of that season gave Vettel the championship lead for the first time all year. He subsequently went on to clinch four consecutive drivers' crowns.

3. Lewis Hamilton

Before Vettel earned the record, Lewis Hamilton held the honor of being Formula 1's youngest champion. Hamilton took his first world title in 2008 at 23 years and 300 days of age. That title arrived after he had narrowly missed out on the crown during his 2007 rookie campaign with McLaren.

Hamilton clinched his maiden championship in dramatic, nail-biting fashion during the memorable 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix. On the final lap of a hugely dramatic race, he overtook Toyota driver Timo Glock at the last corner to claim the vital position necessary to secure the title.

4. Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso became Formula 1's youngest world champion when he claimed the 2005 drivers' title at 24 years and 58 days of age. Driving for Renault, the Spanish racer brought an end to Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's dominant five-year reign atop the sport.

Alonso gathered seven victories during 2005 to win the world championship ahead of McLaren driver Kimi Räikkönen, while Schumacher won once and finished third. Alonso then successfully defended his drivers' crown the following season despite facing a renewed fightback from Schumacher.

5. Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen claimed his maiden world title in 2021 at 24 years and 73 days of age, concluding what proved to be the most controversial climax to an F1 season in history. His success capped a titanic, see-saw battle against seven-time champion Hamilton that raged across the entirety of the year.

Both title contenders arrived at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix level on points. Verstappen overtook Hamilton following a contentious last-lap safety restart, preventing the British driver from capturing a record eighth world title. That result concluded a controversial climax to the 2021 campaign, giving Verstappen the first of four consecutive drivers' championships with Red Bull.

6. Emerson Fittipaldi

Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history in 1972 at 25 years and 273 days of age. The Brazilian held that all-time record for 33 years until Alonso eventually broke it in 2005. That 1972 success was the first of two world titles Fittipaldi achieved.

Fittipaldi secured his 1972 drivers' crown by collecting five Grand Prix victories across 12 races during the season. Those race wins enabled him to beat rival Jackie Stewart to the world championship, while Team Lotus picked up the constructors' title.

7. Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher captured the first of his seven world championship titles in 1994 with Benetton at 25 years and 314 days of age. Following his arrival in the sport detailed in Michael Schumacher's F1 debut, that 1994 success did not place him as the youngest world champion in history at the time, but he became Germany's first Formula 1 world champion.

Schumacher edged out Damon Hill by a single point to claim the 1994 crown. The title battle concluded in highly controversial fashion at the season finale in Australia, where Schumacher won the title after colliding with Hill in an incident that forced both drivers to retire from the race.

8. Lando Norris

Lando Norris joined the ranks of Formula 1's youngest world champions at age 26 when he won the title for the first time in 2025 at 26 years and 24 days. His championship triumph arrived at the conclusion of his seventh season racing in Formula 1.

Norris became the 11th British world champion by defeating Verstappen by two points in the 2025 standings, despite winning one race fewer than his main title rival. Norris was also the first driver to deliver McLaren a world championship since Hamilton did so in 2008.

9. Niki Lauda

Niki Lauda won his first Formula 1 world drivers' title in 1975 at 26 years and 197 days of age. The Austrian driver dominated that championship campaign after storming to race victories in Monaco, Belgium, Sweden, France, and the United States.

Lauda's triumph brought an end to an 11-year championship drought for Ferrari. He subsequently added two further world titles to his career record, claiming a second championship with the Scuderia two years later in 1977, before capturing a third world crown with McLaren in 1984.

10. Jacques Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve rounds out the top ten youngest champions, having clinched the 1997 world championship at 26 years and 200 days of age. The son of legendary Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve had narrowly missed out on the title in his rookie season before winning at the next try with Williams.

Villeneuve won seven times during 1997 to secure the championship ahead of Schumacher. Their title fight culminated at the European Grand Prix in Jerez, where Schumacher was later disqualified from the entire 1997 season for deliberately colliding with the Canadian racer.
