Return to Mexico and Event Identity

The Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix winner's trophy holds a distinctive place in one of the championship calendar's most vibrant events, celebrated for its Day of the Dead festivities and passionate spectator atmosphere. The Mexican round has not continuously featured on the official Formula 1 schedule, making its return in 2015 after an absence lasting more than two decades following an extensive adaptation and recovery project at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Partnership with Tane and Fan Showcase

Following confirmation that grand prix racing would return to Mexico, Formula 1 initiated preparations that included producing a bespoke prize for the race winner. Mexican luxury jewellery house Tane was selected to manufacture the trophy under a ten-year agreement, maintaining the same fundamental aesthetic since the initial edition aside from subtle variations. In addition, an imposing four-metre-high reproduction was erected at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, creating a prominent attraction for spectators attending the grand prix.

Silver Craftsmanship and Structure

Conceptualised under then creative director Nino Bauti, each trophy is handcrafted from .925 silver, recognised as the highest purity grade available for the precious metal. While the base and certain colourings have undergone adjustments over subsequent seasons, the central structural concept has remained consistent: a tubular cup flanked by three wavy bands along the sides that sweep downward.

Symbolism of Speed and National Heritage

In an interview with Caras México, the designer explained the symbolic meaning given to the specific creation, relating that it combines references to speed alongside an iconic national emblem. Resembling a diving eagle, the design incorporates three lines culminating in a beak. The eagle represents Mexico, speed, dynamic movement, and the letter V of victory.

Modern Trophy Winners

Across the modern era of the grand prix since its 2015 comeback, only five drivers have lifted the trophy. German racer Nico Rosberg secured the inaugural modern award while driving for Mercedes, before Lewis Hamilton took victories under the same team banner in 2016 and 2019. Max Verstappen has claimed the greatest share of success with the silverware, winning the Mexican event on five separate occasions. Verstappen's winning streak concluded in 2024 when Carlos Sainz Jr. took victory, with Lando Norris completing the exclusive group of five contemporary winners.

For the venue’s broader background, see the history and technical demands of Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
