Josh Pierson has signed a multi-year contract to drive for AJ Foyt Racing in the 2027 IndyCar Series. The 20-year-old graduates to top-level machinery following four seasons in IndyNXT. AJ Foyt Racing had been rumored to be interested in him across much of the latter part of the season, but the organization was only able to finalize the agreement after an evaluation was completed.
Pierson took part in a single-day evaluation test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier in the month after not meeting the automatic approval threshold established by IndyCar's new driver standards system. He demonstrated sufficient car control and speed during the running, earning official clearance to seek a seat in the series.
Pierson spent six years climbing the IndyCar feeder ladder and also contested multiple campaigns in LMP2 machinery across both IMSA and the World Endurance Championship. His highest championship placement in IndyNXT was a sixth-place finish in 2025.
Pierson stated that competing in IndyCar had been his ambition "for as long as I can remember," explaining that his diverse racing background helped prepare him for the opportunity. He also thanked those who have supported him along the way and noted that a new partner backing the effort will be announced shortly.
The announcement makes Pierson the first rookie confirmed for the 2027 IndyCar grid. He joins Dennis Hauger, last season's rookie of the year, giving AJ Foyt Racing what is expected to be the youngest driver pairing in the field as the team aims to improve upon its 17th and 24th-place championship results.
