Pedro Acosta endured a difficult hour of practice on Friday at the 2026 Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail International Circuit, concluding the session in 14th position. While Fabio Di Giannantonio ended practice at the top of the order, Acosta's P14 result means the Murcia-born KTM rider will need to progress through Qualifying 1 on Saturday to have an opportunity to fight for pole position. That outcome stood in contrast to Brad Binder and Enea Bastianini, who both secured positions inside the top 10 on equal machinery.

Unbeaten Qualifying Record at Risk

The practice classification leaves Acosta's perfect premier-class qualifying record against teammates in jeopardy. Over a three-year span since entering MotoGP, the Spaniard has never been outqualified by a teammate over a single lap, establishing a 60-0 head-to-head record. Because Binder earned an automatic entry into Qualifying 2, Acosta's streak will vanish if he does not manage to secure one of the top two times in Q1. Following the chequered flag, as Acosta debriefed with his crew chief inside the KTM garage, an international television broadcast graphic highlighted his three-year qualifying record against teammates. The rider immediately put his head in his hands and turned away from the television screens, prompting TNT Sports pundit Neil Hodgson to express confidence that Acosta would respond strongly on Saturday.

Guintoli Assesses Braking and Layout Challenges

Following the pre-qualifying practice session on Friday evening (17:06 06/11), MotoGP pundit Sylvain Guintoli gave his assessment on TNT Sports regarding why Acosta struggles at Lusail. Guintoli observed that "the performance just isn't there," explaining that Acosta normally makes his lap time count during the braking and trail-braking phase. The Frenchman explained that the track is a bit different and a bit particular in having faster, flowing corners, noting that Acosta just is not able to make the difference there so far. Guintoli added that Acosta could not make up time in the braking zones during practice, observing him trying to force the motorcycle to do what he wanted while becoming visibly out of shape, concluding that the approach was not working on the Qatar circuit.

Track History and Q1 Outlook

Lusail International Circuit has represented a challenging venue for Acosta since stepping up to the premier class in 2024. Although Pedro Acosta targets Qatar podium finishes, his eighth-place result last year remains his best finish at the track and stands as his joint-worst result across every circuit on the 2026 calendar. In Friday practice, Acosta was 0.166s away from clinching an automatic spot in Q2, suggesting a slight setup tweak to his KTM RC16 could prove to make the difference for Saturday morning qualifying. Looking ahead to Q1, no competitor stands out as a major threat to his progression, though Gresini-Ducati rider Fermin Aldeguer could potentially scupper his chances depending on his competitiveness following hand surgery.
