Track Limit Regulations and Boundaries
MotoGP track limits rules require riders to use only the designated track surface and pit lane during all official sessions. Under FIM Grand Prix World Championship regulations, leaving the racing surface and gaining an advantage or short-cutting triggers strict penalties administered by Race Direction and the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel, ranging from immediate lap time deletion to in-race disciplinary sanctions.
Track Limits in Practice and Qualifying
During practice sessions and warm-up, any track limit violation results in the cancellation of the lap time concerned. The official timing system invalidates the lap whenever an advantage is deemed gained under Race Direction protocols. Under Article 1.15.4, determining lap validity accounts for both the motorcycle and the rider, including instances where rider and machine become separated during an off-track excursion.
Race Infringements and Rejoin Protocols
If a rider accidentally runs off the circuit during a race, they must rejoin at the place designated by officials or at a position that does not provide an advantage. When an advantage is deemed gained by exceeding track limits or short-cutting, the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel decides the appropriate in-race penalty. Stewards also hold the authority to cancel a lap or impose further sanctions if a competitor misses a significant portion of the track when rejoining.
Penalty Notification and Serving Deadlines
When the stewards impose an in-race sanction for exceeding track boundaries, the instruction is communicated directly to the rider via dashboard signals and displayed to teams through timekeeping and television monitors. Teams may also alert their rider using a physical pit board. The official count of laps to comply with the penalty begins on the first crossing of the finish line after the dashboard message has been sent to the machine.
Escalation and Sanction Substitution
Riders must serve the assigned sanction within the designated distance or lap window. Failing to comply within the required distance or number of laps triggers further penalties from officials. While the stewards may impose an ordinary time penalty in place of another penalty where necessary, this statutory substitution remains distinct from the escalated sanctions applied for ignoring a penalty order, aligning with standard MotoGP ride-through penalty serving rules.
Finality of Track Limit Decisions and Appeals
Officiating decisions regarding track limits are classified as statements of fact determined by judges of fact. Under FIM disciplinary regulations, no protest may be lodged against lap cancellations during practice or in-race track limit rulings made by Race Direction or the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel. Furthermore, factual decisions based on track limit violations cannot be appealed to the FIM Appeal Stewards, the Court of Arbitration, or civil courts, ensuring on-track officiating remains final.
