Acosta Takes Sepang Sprint Victory for KTM

Pedro Acosta took victory in the Sepang sprint for KTM, following his earlier triumph at the season opener in Buriram. According to Crash.net, the KTM rider won Saturday's sprint on 31 October ahead of Marc Márquez and Marco Bezzecchi in a race marked by Alex Márquez crashing out and the threat of rain.

Early Crash for Alex Márquez Leaves Ogura in Front

Alex Márquez had claimed pole position and led the opening lap ahead of Ai Ogura, Acosta, Marc Márquez, and Bezzecchi. On the third of ten laps, the Gresini rider crashed at high speed at Turn 14 while still leading. He got up immediately, visibly irritated. Ogura inherited the lead and reached the race's midpoint with Acosta 0.287 seconds behind, while Marc Márquez and Bezzecchi joined the fight for victory with four laps remaining.

Late Passes Decide the Podium Positions

Acosta took the lead with three laps remaining, according to Motociclismo, and withstood an immediate counter-attack from Ogura. After Acosta moved ahead, Marc Márquez also overtook Ogura. The Japanese rider attacked again, with the pair swapping places before Márquez regained the advantage. Bezzecchi took advantage of the battle to pass Ogura. On the final lap, Acosta was out of reach for Márquez, who also ran clear of Bezzecchi, according to Crash.net's coverage.

Rain Threat Triggers Pit-Lane Activity

A white flag authorised riders to swap bikes amid the threat of rain. Jack Miller entered the pits, but Pramac Yamaha was not ready to receive him; the Australian later apologised and explained the incident as a communication failure. Joan Mir, Iker Lecuona, and Franco Morbidelli also stopped, while Maverick Viñales went for a bike fitted with rain tyres late in the race, though coverage at that point still described rainfall as insufficient to justify the choice. Rain became heavy after the finish, and Francesco Bagnaia considered that it had been an aid during the race.

Injuries and Title Picture Shape the Malaysian Weekend

Marc Márquez entered Saturday holding a ten-point advantage over Jorge Martín, who withdrew from the event following the final free practice session. The Aprilia rider had fractured a wrist in a crash at Phillip Island while battling Márquez for the sprint win; missing Sunday's race in Australia did not cost him further points because that event was cancelled. Martín received medical clearance to return on Friday and was deemed fit after the opening session before withdrawing on Saturday. Former MotoGP race winner Marco Melandri questioned the doctors' initial decision to let him race at Sepang. Raúl Fernández was also sidelined after struggling with a finger fracture sustained in the first free practice session. In race preparations, Enea Bastianini led the final free practice session, while Johann Zarco and Bagnaia advanced from the first phase of qualifying to the second. Bezzecchi entered the sprint 50 points off the lead and finished on the podium for Aprilia, while Alex Márquez is evaluating shoulder surgery and could miss the round in Qatar.
