Martin Withdrawal Shifts Pressure to Bezzecchi

Aprilia saw its 2026 MotoGP championship hopes shattered at the Malaysian Grand Prix, with Marco Bezzecchi unable to keep the manufacturer in contention. The Noale outfit suffered a major blow prior to the race when Jorge Martin withdrew from the weekend because of an arm injury sustained at Phillip Island, leaving Bezzecchi as Aprilia's lone hope to keep them in the title fight.

Marquez Dominates Sunday to Establish Title Match Point

Marc Marquez finished second in the Sprint with Bezzecchi third, but on Sunday, the Ducati rider disappeared at the front. Marquez dominated the Malaysian Grand Prix to take victory, while Aprilia was nowhere to be seen. The win gave Marquez a title match point for the 2026 championship in Qatar and moved him 44 points clear of Martin, who conceded the 2026 title after his withdrawal from the Malaysian Grand Prix, as Bezzecchi could do nothing to give Aprilia a fighting chance.

Pace Deficit and Final-Lap Excursion

During Sunday's race, the RS-GP struggled to match the pace of the Ducatis in front. Bezzecchi could not rival the Marquez brothers and Acosta, and later lost P4 to Ai Ogura. Matters worsened for Aprilia on the final lap when Bezzecchi committed an unforced error, running wide and losing fifth to Enea Bastianini.

Hodgson Scrutinises Fatigue and Concentration

Neil Hodgson delivered a brutal assessment of the final-lap error on TNT Sports 2. Hodgson attributed the mistake to "fatigue" and a lapse in "concentration," stating that if anything summed up Bezzecchi's season it was that moment, and that is why he will not become a MotoGP world champion. He also highlighted the sequence of unforced errors across the campaign, pointing back to a crash in the very first Sprint of round one and remarking on the extensive list of mistakes.

Unforced Errors Undermine Campaign Consistency

Multiple errors across 2026 have undermined Bezzecchi's championship prospects, with recurring mistakes proving costly. Although he displayed immense pace earlier in the year by claiming three wins in the first three races, he has not consistently maintained it across the full season. Bezzecchi's suspension from the Czech GP, along with crashes at Assen, Balaton Park and Misano, have tarnished his campaign, with the mistake in Sepang seen as unreflective of a title-winning effort. While he may have the pace—with Valentino Rossi believing Bezzecchi has been quicker than Marquez across the season—that consistency has not been present.
