Ducati Remains Cautious Despite Championship Cushion

Ducati Corse general manager Gigi Dall'Igna has urged caution across the Borgo Panigale camp following the Malaysian Grand Prix, insisting that the 2026 MotoGP world championship fight is far from settled despite Marc Marquez taking a commanding step toward a tenth career title. While Marquez's victory at Sepang established a substantial championship cushion and granted him his first mathematical opportunity to seal the crown at the upcoming round in Qatar, figures inside the Ducati Lenovo garage are refusing to begin early celebrations.

Marquez Dominates Sepang as Rivals Falter

Starting from second on the grid at Sepang, Marquez seized the lead immediately, dictating the tempo at the front before opening a clear gap to capture the Grand Prix victory. Having also capitalized on the absence of title rival Jorge Martin, the Spanish rider accumulated 34 points across the sprint and main race combined over the Malaysian weekend. Martin had already opted out of running on Saturday following a fractured radius sustained at Phillip Island, while Marco Bezzecchi finished sixth after being hindered by a risky battle with Ai Ogura.

Championship Permutations for Lusail

The weekend sweep elevated Marquez to a 44-point advantage over Martin in the standings and opened a 67-point buffer over Bezzecchi with three race weekends left in the campaign. That points equation puts Marquez in position for his first championship match point at the Lusail circuit in Qatar. To secure the world title mathematically at the next event, Marquez must outscore Martin by at least 30 points while expanding his margin over Bezzecchi by eight points.

Dall'Igna Reaction and Qatar GP Uncertainty

Speaking to Sky Sport following the race, Dall'Igna played down suggestions that the championship was effectively decided, underscoring that the team must maintain focus until the final round. Dall'Igna remarked: "We haven't done anything yet; three difficult races remain, and what matters is being ahead at the final race." Alongside Ducati's internal prudence, the staging of the Qatar Grand Prix itself remains subject to uncertainty. Substantial doubts persist surrounding the Lusail event, as several riders remain reluctant to travel and compete under conditions shaped by international tensions in the Middle East. World championship organizers have countered by warning of sporting sanctions, including potential exclusion from the subsequent round in Portimao for competitors who do not appear.
