Arrival in Brazil
One week after the crowning of the champion, Formula 1 travels south to Brazil and the renowned Interlagos circuit for the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix. With the drivers' championship already settled in favour of Kimi Antonelli, teams and competitors arrive at the celebrated venue for one of the most distinctive fixtures of the motorsport season.
Origins and Heritage of Interlagos
Formally designated as the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, the circuit represents an iconic venue that has staged several defining milestones in grand prix history. Constructed in 1940, the Interlagos moniker was derived from the layout's position between two lakes, reflecting the literal meaning of the name. The facility honours Brazilian racing driver José Carlos Pace, who competed in Formula 1 during the 1970s and secured victory at the circuit in 1975 before losing his life in an airplane accident in 1977.
Calendar Tenure and Contract Extension
Interlagos originally featured on the Formula 1 schedule from 1973 through the end of that decade, before an approximate ten-year hiatus with an intermediate stop in Rio de Janeiro, after which the championship returned to São Paulo where it has remained to this day. Political dynamics previously created tension when the municipal administration of São Paulo stood in opposition to the national government, leading federal authorities to withdraw financial backing in an effort to move the event back to Rio. However, regional authorities maintained funding for the race and agreed a contract extension with championship organizers last year, keeping the venue on the calendar through at least 2030.
Track Characteristics and Technical Demands
Situated in the suburbs of São Paulo within the urban fabric, the 4.309-kilometre anti-clockwise layout presents specific technical demands over a 305.879-kilometre grand prix distance. The circuit blends high-speed stretches requiring drivers to stay flat on the throttle with a tight, technical middle sector, accompanied by elevation changes and banked track surfaces. Valtteri Bottas holds the lap record with a time of 1:10.540 set during the 2018 event. Unpredictable weather shifts have regularly influenced outcomes, while the circuit's counter-clockwise direction and dramatic gradients make it an appealing challenge for the grid.
Championship Deciders and Landmark Moments
The largely unaltered configuration has consistently generated dramatic racing and historic championship conclusions, particularly following its calendar shift toward the season's closing stages from 2004 onward. Interlagos hosted five consecutive drivers' title deciders between 2005 and 2009, highlighted by the 2008 showdown settled on the final corner, as well as an eventful and disruptive finale in 2012. The Brazilian venue was also the site of Ayrton Senna's maiden home victory in 1991 among numerous landmark moments in the sport.
Format Adjustment and Statistical Milestones
Although Interlagos has consistently staged a sprint race each year since the introduction of the shorter format in 2021, the 2026 running will not include a sprint event, marking the first time since the format's adoption that the venue conducts a traditional race weekend schedule. In the record books, Michael Schumacher remains the most successful driver at the venue, a benchmark Lewis Hamilton can match with another victory. McLaren shares the top spot in the constructors' standings at the track alongside Ferrari, having levelled the score courtesy of Lando Norris's victory last year. Pirelli will supply its middle compound range of C2, C3, and C4 tyres, while early forecasts suggest a high probability of thunderstorms during the three-day weekend.
Television Broadcast and Americas Schedule
Television coverage for the grand prix weekend will be handled by ANTENNA Group, the broadcast rights holder for the 2026 championship, with Sunday's grand prix airing live on ANT1 at 19:00 on Sunday evening, while the entire schedule will stream on the ANT1+ subscription platform alongside Formula 1's OTT service, F1TV. Following the visit to Brazil, the championship concludes its Americas journey with the Las Vegas Grand Prix scheduled for November 19–21.
