Historic Title Clinched at Mexico Grand Prix
Italian racer Kimi Antonelli entered Formula 1 history on Sunday, November 1, by securing his first world championship at the Mexico Grand Prix. Antonelli finished the race in third place, a result sufficient to mathematically seal the championship. At 20 years and 68 days of age, Antonelli became the category's youngest champion, breaking a 16-year record previously held by Sebastian Vettel, who secured his first world championship in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. The achievement also ended a 73-year drought for Italy, marking the country's first Drivers' World Championship triumph since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat in 1953.
Cockpit Emotions Before the Chequered Flag
The emotional weight of the achievement surfaced well before the chequered flag fell, as tears did not emerge only during the post-race celebrations. During the closing laps, upon realizing that he was about to achieve a childhood dream, the Italian driver began weeping inside the car. According to Antonelli, the emotion impaired his vision and led to a loss of about two seconds on the penultimate lap. He subsequently decided to reduce his pace to avoid an accident and secure the result, while recollections of his career journey from karting up to motorsport's premier category passed through his thoughts before he crossed the finish line to celebrate.
Podium Celebration and Operatic Tribute
On the podium, Antonelli shared the celebration with race winner Max Verstappen and second-placed finisher Lewis Hamilton. Both drivers joined the festivities, lifting the new champion before the crowd. Amid the celebration, Giacomo Puccini's famous composition "Nessun Dorma," from the opera Turandot, was played during the podium ceremony. The piece carried special personal significance for Antonelli, as his grandfather frequently listened to it, evoking memories of him and adding extra emotion to the milestone.
Family Sacrifices and Press Conference Reflections
In the post-race press conference, Antonelli explained that the music made him remember his grandfather and reflect on how proud he would have been of the accomplishment. Speaking about the moment, the driver became emotional again and joked about the number of times he had cried throughout the day. Antonelli also highlighted the sacrifices his family made to support his career, noting that family members made a long journey to attend in person in Mexico, which made the achievement even more meaningful.
Looking Forward to the Brazilian Grand Prix
Antonelli's career began in karting and gathered momentum through support from Mercedes, who backed his talent when he was 11 years old. With the drivers' championship resolved, Antonelli heads to the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos, scheduled for November 6–8, in an unprecedented career position as a Formula 1 world champion. The Brazilian round will take place at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, where the Italian will be able to celebrate the achievement before Brazilian fans.
