Mexican Grand Prix Weekend Addition

Colombian-American Formula 2 driver Sebastián Montoya has described the prospect of racing at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez alongside the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix as "irresistible" following an exploratory track visit. The single-seater junior feeder series is scheduled to stage rounds in the Mexican capital from October 29 to 31, 2027, competing almost simultaneously with the premier championship weekend.

Track Outing and Driver Aspirations

Speaking during an interview with news agency EFE after turning laps on the Mexico City circuit, the 21-year-old Miami-born racer—son of Colombian motorsport icon Juan Pablo Montoya—explained that experiencing the course firsthand fueled his ambition to take part in the upcoming event. He admitted harboring envy toward grand prix competitors who already race in Mexico, characterizing the venue as an exceptional Latin American stop where every driver wants to appear, and pledged to deliver an exciting show for local fans if he secures a position on the grid.

Current Campaign and Prema Departure

Montoya is currently concluding his tenure with Prema Racing, the Italian outfit that welcomed him into Formula 2 in 2025. Evaluating his campaign, the junior driver acknowledged that the season had proven complicated and frustrating as a result of internal team difficulties, adding that while observers recognize his inherent speed, stepping up into Formula 1 requires delivering tangible results and overcoming setbacks to stand among the sport's finest competitors.

Formula 2 Dynamics and Graduation Pathway

Reflecting on the unique appeal of Formula 2, Montoya emphasized that aggressive driving styles make races remarkably thrilling as emerging talents strive to capture the attention of top-tier squads. He noted that claims portraying junior contests as more entertaining than Formula 1 contain substantial truth, with tight performance parity pushing drivers to prove their capabilities, even when eagerness occasionally induces mistakes. To illustrate the feeder ladder's efficacy, he pointed to current Formula 1 racers Andrea Antonelli, Alexander Albon, Lando Norris, George Russell, and Franco Colapinto, all of whom demonstrated their skill in Formula 2 before graduating.

Latin American Representation on the Grid

The championship also features a strong Latin American contingent, whom Montoya urged to support one another. The junior standings are led by Brazilian racer Rafael Câmara of Invicta Racing, joined on the grid by compatriot Emerson Fittipaldi Júnior. Mexico is represented by Noel León of Campos Racing and Rafael Villagómez of Van Amersfoort Racing, competing alongside Paraguayan driver Joshua Duerksen and Argentine racer Nico Varrone.

Series Expansion and Historical Milestones

Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel labeled the trip to Mexico a "logical step" and an exciting venture, praising the passionate regional crowds and electric atmosphere generated around the Mexican Grand Prix, which has run uninterruptedly since 2015. The expansion marks another milestone for the FIA junior category, which recently reached a decade since its inaugural 2017 season following an agreement with the GP2 Series. Prior to 2026, 22 graduates had ascended into Formula 1, amassing 33 grand prix victories and 150 podium finishes.

Audience Reach and Qatar Grand Prix

Formula 2 currently attracts an audience of more than 60 million global viewers across over 170 nations, supported by 3.5 million social media followers with strong digital interaction rates. The championship is scheduled to contest its next round at Lusail International Circuit for the Qatar Grand Prix from November 27 to 29.
