At a glance

  • Manuel Gonzalez set a 1:30.122 to take Moto2 pole position for his 100th Grand Prix start at Phillip Island.
  • Barry Baltus finished second by 0.106s, with Filip Salac claiming third after gaining a slipstream behind Izan Guevara.
  • Title rival Guevara recovered to sixth, 0.155s from pole, leaving a 5.5-point championship margin heading into Sunday.
  • A heavy Turn 8 crash for provisional pole-sitter Senna Agius triggered yellow flags that disrupted late flying laps across the field.

Manuel Gonzalez marked his 100th Grand Prix start by claiming pole position for the Australian Moto2 Grand Prix at Phillip Island. In a frantic second qualifying session disrupted by yellow flags, the championship leader recorded a 1:30.122 lap time to edge Barry Baltus and Filip Salac, securing his tenth career Moto2 pole and his first since the Italian Grand Prix.

Late yellow flags disrupt the field

After Q1 sent Zonta van den Goorbergh, Ivan Ortola, Tony Arbolino, and Collin Veijer through to the pole shootout, the early Q2 benchmarks changed hands swiftly between Alonso Lopez, Joe Roberts, and home rider Senna Agius. Agius held provisional pole at mid-session before crashing heavily at Turn 8 on an out lap with just over four minutes remaining. The resulting yellow flags compromised fast laps for several contenders, including Guevara, David Alonso, Taiyo Furusato, and Salac, while Gonzalez and Baltus had already cleared the incident sector on their flying laps.

Title rivals separated on Sunday's grid

Gonzalez capitalized on clear track to deliver his 1:30.122 pole lap, with Baltus slotting into second just 0.106s behind. During the final scramble, Salac utilized a tow from Guevara to jump to third with a 1:30.237, demoting Ortola to fourth and Holgado to fifth. Guevara pushed through to salvage sixth, ending just 0.155s off Gonzalez. Agius's earlier benchmark proved sufficient for seventh despite his accident, heading Huertas, Lopez, and Arbolino in a top ten covered by just 0.212s, while Alonso finished 14th after repeated disruptions. Gonzalez enters Sunday with a front-row start to defend his 5.5-point championship lead over Guevara.

Sources: Gonzalez strikes pole as Championship battle heats up.
