Marquez Reclaims Championship Lead as Martin Crashes Out
Marc Marquez took control of the MotoGP World Championship standings after capturing victory in the Tissot Sprint at the Red Bull Grand Prix of Australia, capitalising when primary title rival Jorge Martin crashed out of an intense battle for the lead at Phillip Island. Martin, who arrived in Australia holding the championship advantage, fell heavily at Turn 8 on Lap 8 while attempting to hunt down Marquez. The crash sent the Aprilia rider tumbling through the gravel and resulted in a weekend-ending injury, officially ruling him out of Sunday's main race.
Marquez and Martin Trade Blows in Multi-Lap Thriller
Marquez converted his grid position into an immediate holeshot for the Ducati Lenovo Team, while Martin launched aggressively from the second row to slot straight into second place. The duel ignited on Lap 2 when Alex Marquez briefly squeezed his Gresini machine past Martin into Turn 10, only for Martin to counter with an instant pass at Turn 1. Martin then set his sights on the elder Marquez brother, attempting a dive at Turn 4 on Lap 3 before completing an overtake into Turn 10 to seize the lead. Behind the lead pack, early fourth-place runner Johann Zarco suffered a technical failure aboard his Castrol Honda LCR bike that forced him into retirement from fifth.
Martin's spell at the front was short-lived following a mistake at Turn 4 on Lap 5 that allowed Marquez back through. Martin responded on Lap 6 with another bold lunge into Turn 1, but could not hold the line into Turn 2, giving Marquez the advantage. A repeat move by Martin on Lap 8 yielded the same outcome, prompting another block-pass attempt into Turn 4 that Marquez resisted. Pushing hard on the limit, Martin clipped the inside kerb at Turn 7, unsettling his Aprilia as he tipped into Turn 8. The front tyre tucked away, leaving Martin helpless as he slid out of second place and out of the weekend.
Ducati Seals Podium Lockout as Ogura Penalty Alters Order
Martin's crash left Marc Marquez leading at the front, where he resisted late charges from Alex Marquez and Di Giannantonio to secure victory and seal a family one-two ahead of the Pertamina Enduro VR46 rider in third. The result completed an all-Ducati podium lockout despite intermittent rain drops threatening the circuit in the closing stages. Marco Bezzecchi delivered a strong fightback for Aprilia Racing, dropping from ninth to 12th on the opening lap before clawing through the pack to overtake Pedro Acosta into Turn 1 with four laps remaining for fourth.
Ai Ogura took the chequered flag in sixth for SuperFile Trackhouse, but race stewards subsequently issued an eight-second post-Sprint tyre pressure penalty against the Japanese rider. The penalty demoted Ogura out of the top nine, elevating Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Brad Binder to sixth, Prima Pramac Yamaha's Jack Miller to seventh, Diogo Moreira to eighth, and Gresini substitute Iker Lecuona into the final point-scoring place in ninth.
Title Picture Shifts Ahead of Australian Grand Prix
Marquez's ninth Sprint win of the season hands the Spaniard the World Championship lead heading into Sunday's Grand Prix, where Martin's confirmed absence leaves Aprilia without their primary championship contender. The manufacturer also lost 2025 Australian Grand Prix winner Raul Fernandez, who withdrew from the Australian MotoGP after retiring from the Sprint due to ongoing pain from a fractured right index finger sustained in Indonesia. With uncertain weather forecast across Phillip Island, the 2026 Red Bull Grand Prix of Australia main race is scheduled to begin at 14:00 local time.
