Aprilia Racing rider Jorge Martin has been declared unfit for Sunday's Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island following an eighth-lap crash during Saturday's Tissot Sprint. The 2024 World Champion entered the weekend leading the championship standings, but slid out of contention at Turn 8 while duelling Marc Marquez for the race lead and the title advantage. The fall ended Martin's Sprint prematurely and ruled him out of the remainder of the Grand Prix weekend.
Sprint Duel and Turn 8 Crash Sequence
Martin started from the second row of the grid and immediately advanced to second place behind Marquez, who had secured the holeshot. On Lap 2, Alex Marquez overtook Martin into Turn 10, but Martin immediately reclaimed the position with a pass into Turn 1. Martin then closed on Marc Marquez, attacking into Turn 4 on Lap 3 before executing an overtake into Turn 10 to take the race lead. Marquez regained the lead on Lap 5 after Martin made an error at Turn 4. Although Martin fought back into Turn 1 on Lap 6, he was unable to hold his line through Turn 2.
On Lap 8, Martin launched another block-pass attempt into Turn 4 before running across the inside kerb at Turn 7. The kerb unsettled his bike on the entry to Turn 8, causing him to tuck the front end. Despite Martin's efforts to dig in and save the slide, he tumbled through the gravel trap, ending his race.
Forearm Fractures and Medical Evaluation
Martin was transported to the Phillip Island circuit medical centre following the crash. X-rays revealed a confirmed fracture of the radius and a suspected fracture of the ulna at the distal end, establishing a break in one forearm bone near the wrist alongside a possible second fracture. Circuit medical officials formally declared him unfit for Sunday's Australian Grand Prix.
Martin will travel to Melbourne to undergo further examinations and secure a definitive assessment of the arm injury before determining his recovery approach. "We'll see how the injury is – and how we approach the next few days," Martin said regarding his upcoming medical checks.
Championship Impact and Aprilia Standings
The crash produced an immediate swing in the 2026 World Championship battle. With Martin scoring no points on Saturday and sidelined for Sunday's race, Marquez claimed his ninth Sprint victory of the season and reclaimed the championship lead. Aprilia Racing's representation in the Sprint was led by Martin's teammate Marco Bezzecchi, who fought back from 12th place at the end of the opening lap to finish fourth.
