Championship Shift at Phillip Island
Ducati Lenovo Team manager Davide Tardozzi has assessed the state of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship battle following a dramatic weekend at Phillip Island that elevated Marc Marquez into a 10-point lead over Aprilia Racing's Jorge Martin. Entering the event separated by just two points, the championship changed complexion when Martin crashed at Turn 8 on the eighth lap of Saturday's Sprint. The incident left Martin with a non-displaced fracture of his distal radius and ruled him out of further running Down Under, before Sunday's Grand Prix was cancelled due to poor visibility grounding the medical helicopter.
Safety Prioritised After Sprint Drama
Reflecting on the cancellation that prevented Ducati from extending its margin, Tardozzi stressed that the team fully prioritized rider safety over sporting and commercial concerns. He also acknowledged Martin's competitive form prior to the fall, conceding that it was uncertain whether Marquez would have been able to defeat the Aprilia rider in the closing stages had the head-to-head battle continued without Martin's mistake.
Marquez Rebounds to the Title Lead
Marquez's arrival at the summit of the standings caps a sustained comeback across 2026, recovering from a 102-point deficit to hold the points lead on the strength of six Grand Prix victories and four pole positions. Tardozzi highlighted Marquez's mature management during the Australian Sprint, noting that the Spaniard was calculating rather than forcing the issue. Stating that Marquez "always surprises us", Tardozzi expressed conviction that the factory Ducati rider's finest performances are still to come as the title run-in intensifies.
Assessing Aprilia Across the Final Four Rounds
Looking ahead to the remaining four rounds of the season, Tardozzi predicted a challenging duel against Aprilia. He projected that three of the upcoming venues favor Aprilia's machinery while only one clearly suits Ducati, though he maintained that having Marquez in their stable provides reassurance. Tardozzi also cautioned that Aprilia's challenge extends beyond Martin, whose participation in Malaysia remains unconfirmed and whose fitness will be tested at Sepang and Qatar; with Marco Bezzecchi trailing by 50 points, Tardozzi insisted the deficit is manageable and warned that Bezzecchi possesses the potential to win every race remaining on the calendar.
