Joan Mir will return to the MotoGP grid this weekend for the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, having secured medical clearance following an extended health-related absence. The 2020 premier-class world champion will rejoin the Honda HRC Castrol squad after missing four consecutive rounds across Austria, Japan, Indonesia, and Australia while recuperating.
Medical Investigations Following Misano
Mir's forced time away from competition stemmed from the Misano round, where health problems prevented him from completing the race. In the aftermath of the event, the Mallorcan rider travelled to Barcelona to undergo exhaustive medical evaluations. Official team communications subsequently confirmed that blood tests had detected "altered parameters" that required further investigation, though the precise medical diagnosis that temporarily sidelined the Spanish rider has not been disclosed.
Physical Rehabilitation and Clearance
The Spaniard's rehabilitation reached a decisive stage over the past week, when he was able to resume track running on various types of motorcycles. Following those sessions, medical specialists officially granted him the green light to resume competitive racing. In a statement released through Honda HRC Castrol, Mir admitted that his absence had been "not an easy period" and expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him in staying focused and working toward his recovery.
Sepang Priorities and Season Outlook
Heading into the Sepang weekend, Mir emphasised that his immediate priority is to climb back aboard the bike, reconnect with his team, and gauge his physical sensations on track. The 2020 champion noted that the Sepang circuit holds fond memories for both himself and Honda, adding that returning on such a familiar layout represents the right choice as he contests the closing races of the year before joining Gresini Ducati for the upcoming season.
