MotoGP competitors organized a private meeting at the Sepang International Circuit on Friday night to evaluate their participation in the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix, according to commentator Gavin Emmett. Addressing media chatter surrounding the gathering during TNT Sports’ Saturday morning Free Practice 2 broadcast at the Malaysian Grand Prix, the paddock insider explained that the premier grid assembled secretly inside Yamaha’s offices at the track. The dialogue occurred strictly between the racers themselves, with team managers and officials from the MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group entirely absent from the room.

Emmett reported that the discussions produced no collective unanimity across the field, revealing that only two riders were happy to travel and race at the Lusail International Circuit. Both competitors were Aprilia riders Marco Bezzecchi and Ai Ogura. While a couple of riders expressed willingness to compete, the remaining racers felt unsure and voiced reservations. However, Emmett clarified that nobody in the meeting directly stated they definitely did not want to go, framing the exchange as a mature, grown-up discussion among colleagues regarding their involvement.

The gathering emerged amid heightened controversy surrounding next weekend's scheduled round at Lusail, where series organisers remain adamant that the event will proceed despite ongoing conflict across the Middle East, with areas of Qatar targeted in recent weeks. Competing squads have also been cautioned that they will be fined if they decide to boycott the race weekend, as per standard guidelines for manufacturers skipping races. Furthermore, earlier reports noted that an anonymous team manager considered the decision to proceed unacceptable, alongside theories that riders are being told exactly what to say on the matter.

Assessing the situation on the broadcast, television pundit and former MotoGP rider Neil Hodgson suggested that the summit arrived too late, even though it served as the first genuine example of the grid uniting to share thoughts on racing in Qatar. Hodgson noted that Carlos Ezpeleta had spent time in Qatar during the week conducting meetings and establishing contingency plans if issues arise during the event.

Furthermore, Qatar will bankroll anything that needs to be covered if issues emerge, with measures in place as an FIM rally runs in the country this weekend and things proceed normally. While acknowledging awareness of the huge potential threat, Hodgson concluded that it remains "business as usual."
