Potential Ownership Change at Cadillac

The Cadillac Formula 1 team could see an ownership change after competing in the championship for less than a year, with principal backer Mark Walter considering the sale of all or part of the outfit. Walter, the American billionaire whose TWG Global firm controls the entry, faces substantial legal and financial difficulties in the United States and has begun gradually selling off sports assets to generate cash to settle liabilities. Media reports in business outlets indicate that Walter is seriously weighing a transaction that would value the Grand Prix organization at approximately $3 billion.

Project Expenditure and Infrastructure Development

Cadillac spent several years working to secure entry into Formula 1, committing roughly $1 billion to the project to date. That expenditure encompasses a $450 million fee paid to the other teams, the ongoing expense of maintaining its own outfit, and capital spent constructing and outfitting its facilities.

TWG Global Operations and General Motors Partnership

TWG Global serves as the operator and majority owner of the Cadillac squad, operating in motorsport through its TWG Motorsports division. The investment firm is owned by Walter, while automobile manufacturer General Motors holds an unspecified equity share in the Formula 1 team. Although details have not been explicitly disclosed, statements indicate that TWG Global finances the racing team, with General Motors supplying technical support and a smaller financial contribution. General Motors is also preparing a factory and conducting development work to build its own power unit for the Formula 1 programme. Walter does not act as the public face of the operation, with day-to-day management overseen by Dan Towriss.

United States Legal Inquiries and Sports Asset Sales

Walter has faced significant difficulties in the United States for some time. According to media reports, investigators are examining transactions between insurance firms owned by Walter that provided loans to other companies under his ownership. Many of those agreements were not disclosed, with figures reportedly reaching as high as $20 billion. In response to these liabilities, Walter has been selling assets to raise needed cash. In 2025, he completed the purchase of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers at a $10 billion valuation. Due to ongoing troubles, he has spent several months seeking to sell the franchise to new investors at a $12.5 billion valuation, although the sale has not finalized because it requires league approval. Earlier in 2026, Walter also sold shares in English football club Chelsea F.C. as part of efforts to divest major sporting assets.

Prospective Suitors and Fenway Sports Group Talks

Reporting from The Wall Street Journal indicates that Walter, pressured by an ongoing federal investigation in the United States, is seriously considering selling his stake in the Cadillac squad. Several interested parties have submitted proposals, with Fenway Sports Group, owned by American billionaire John W. Henry, viewed as the leading contender. FSG's current portfolio includes Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, English football club Liverpool FC, and NASCAR team RFK Racing. The WSJ reported that discussions are taking place, though an eventual sale is not certain to conclude. Walter is seeking a team valuation of at least $3 billion, with a partial share sale considered more probable than offloading all of his shares.

Market Context and Investor Interest

While the Cadillac team is not on the market for sale, incoming offers continue to arrive, presenting what is viewed as a unique opportunity for global investors. Formula 1 team valuations continue to climb while opportunities to secure a significant equity stake remain scarce, as nearly all competing entries possess stable ownership, aside from a 24 percent holding in Alpine that has seen no activity for months. Interest has centered largely on major investment and sports funds active in North American professional leagues and European football. From a sporting perspective, an ownership transition involving financial investors is not expected to affect Cadillac's racing operations or result in a name change.

Valuation Scrutiny and Paddock Implications

Cadillac represents the weakest team in Formula 1 with virtually no commercial sponsors, requiring owner funding while still developing its backing facilities. Established operations such as Mercedes and Ferrari carry media estimates of roughly $6 billion, compared to valuations well above $10 billion under an equivalent baseline. A transaction at a $3 billion level would also test whether Liberty Media or fellow competitors might voice objections if regulations permit, as an early exit would allow Walter to secure substantial profit from climbing entry valuations rather than committing to a long-term enterprise.
