Promotion Brought Forward for São Paulo Grand Prix

Rafa Câmara is set to make his Formula 1 debut as a race driver at this weekend's São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos after Haas decided to advance his promotion to the team. The 21-year-old racer from Pernambuco, signed for the 2027 season, will take the place of Esteban Ocon and will also drive the American squad's car at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The arrangement was confirmed by Brazilian outlet ge, seeing the team field the country's newest competitor in the championship for two rounds.

Seat Opening and Hirakawa Schedule Conflict

The opportunity arose following a series of swift changes within the team. Ocon was removed from Haas activities during the Mexico City Grand Prix over the previous weekend amid internal issues. To substitute for him at that event, the outfit fielded Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa, who finished the race and scored a championship point. Hirakawa's existing commitments also influenced the choice for Interlagos, as he has an obligation with Toyota in the World Endurance Championship for the 6 Hours of Monza, scheduled between November 6 and 8. Faced with this calendar conflict, Haas needed another option for Ocon's car and resolved the vacancy at Haas by bringing forward Câmara's arrival.

Preparation Ahead of 2027 and Formula 2 Campaign

The Brazilian had already secured a deal with the team for 2027, but he will now gain early familiarity with the routine of a grand prix race weekend before the start of his initial full campaign. The promotion comes at an important juncture in his career, as he currently leads the Formula 2 standings and remains in contention for the title. Owing to the demands of the junior calendar, Câmara is expected to participate in only the São Paulo and Las Vegas rounds for Haas this year.

Milestone for Brazilian Representation in Formula 1

Câmara will become the 34th Brazilian driver to contest a race in motorsport's premier championship. His arrival on the grid comes amid a renewed presence for the nation in Formula 1, joining Gabriel Bortoleto, who is competing in the series with Audi. In 2027, the two drivers are expected to form a Brazilian pairing on the grid, a scenario not seen in the category since 2016, when Felipe Massa and Felipe Nasr raced for Williams and Sauber, respectively.

Junior Career Progression and Ferrari Academy

Born in Recife, Rafael Câmara built his path through the feeder categories with significant championship triumphs. In 2024, he secured the Formula Regional European Championship title, and the following year he won Formula 3 in his debut season. That progression elevated him to Formula 2 in 2026 with Invicta Racing, establishing him among the primary contenders for the crown. Signed by Haas under a multi-year agreement announced in October that planned for his premier-class arrival in 2027, the Brazilian has also been a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2021. After impressing the squad during tests with their 2025 car at Portimão in Portugal, he now receives the opportunity to turn that promotion into a race appearance at his home grand prix.
