Haas has left a cockpit vacancy unresolved ahead of the Formula 1 São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos, creating an unexpected opportunity for Rafael Câmara to potentially bring forward his premier-class debut. The American team began navigating the situation during the preceding Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, where Esteban Ocon was removed from action for the remainder of the event. While Haas confirmed that the French driver's withdrawal was not triggered by health concerns, the organisation offered no official explanation regarding the reasoning behind the choice. Furthermore, team principal Ayao Komatsu declined to confirm whether Ocon would return behind the wheel in Brazil, indicating that the matter continues to be evaluated internally.
Hirakawa Commitment and Calendar Clash
In Mexico, Haas placed Ryo Hirakawa into Ocon's car, and retaining the Japanese racer represents one potential route for the upcoming round. However, that path presents a significant scheduling conflict. Hirakawa maintains contractual ties with Toyota in the World Endurance Championship, whose championship-deciding round is scheduled to take place at Monza on 8 November, coinciding directly with the São Paulo Grand Prix weekend. Because Hirakawa is actively contesting the WEC drivers' crown, committing to Haas at Interlagos would clash with his sports car title aspirations.
Doohan Available as Reserve Option
Haas reserve driver Jack Doohan stands as another viable alternative should neither Ocon nor Hirakawa take the seat. The Australian racer already possesses Formula 1 grand prix weekend track time, having previously substituted for Ocon at Alpine toward the conclusion of the 2024 campaign before progressing into a full-time race seat with the French outfit for 2025. With that background, Doohan could be summoned once again if Haas finds itself unable to run either its regular driver or its Mexican stand-in.
Superlicence Points and Ferrari Clearance
Against that backdrop, Brazilian racer Rafael Câmara has surfaced as an intriguing prospect. The Pernambuco native has already signed with Haas as a confirmed race driver for the 2027 season, holds sufficient points to secure an FIA superlicence, and currently leads the Formula 2 championship. He was already scheduled to participate in Free Practice 1 at Interlagos driving for Ferrari. However, his affiliation with the Italian manufacturer constitutes the primary hurdle to any grand prix start. Stepping into the Haas cockpit for the race would require formal permission and release from Ferrari, and no official request had been submitted at the time of reporting, although circumstances could accelerate if Ocon is ruled out and Hirakawa proves unavailable.
Prospect of Two Brazilian Drivers at Interlagos
Should Haas ultimately select Câmara, the 2027 signing would contest his maiden grand prix on home soil only weeks after finalising his future promotion to the grid. Such an outcome would also recreate a shared home presence in the championship, placing two Brazilian competitors—Câmara and Gabriel Bortoleto—alongside each other on the starting grid in front of the local crowd at Interlagos. Any final arrangement nevertheless remains contingent upon forthcoming internal determinations by the American squad and reciprocal clearance from Ferrari.
