Potential Reduced Field at Lusail
The upcoming Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail could feature a heavily reduced MotoGP starting grid as a consequence of team absences, persistent injuries, and medical uncertainty across the paddock. According to reporting from Sky Sport Italia, the premier-class field risks shrinking toward numbers not witnessed since the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Should none of the injured or uncertain competitors receive clearance to participate and no further replacements be fielded alongside the manufacturer absences, the Sunday contest could run with as few as 14 starters.
Factory Yamaha and Pramac Withdrawals
A substantial portion of the vacant spots stems from Yamaha's decision to forgo the trip to Lusail because of the complicated geopolitical situation, which is detailed in Yamaha's corporate travel restrictions. This decision sidelines factory riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins. The choice also affects the satellite Yamaha Pramac squad, whose garage incorporates Iwata factory engineers, preventing Australian Jack Miller from competing alongside the factory team.
Razgatlioglu Injury and Stand-In Complications
Pramac rider Toprak Razgatlioglu had already concluded his campaign after undergoing shoulder surgery, and would have been unable to ride in any case given Yamaha's choice not to take part in the Qatar round. Augusto Fernandez had been set to substitute for the injured Razgatlioglu, but the Pramac MotoGP squad will not be at Lusail following Yamaha's decision to forgo the weekend.
Alex Marquez Sidelined for Surgery
Beyond the Yamaha entries, Alex Marquez is absent from the event due to collarbone surgery involving a plate inserted by doctors following a heavy accident at Barcelona last May. While Marquez is sidelined, Iker Lecuona will remain on track at Lusail to ride in his place, having previously served as a substitute elsewhere on the grid.
Aprilia Riders Face Physical Hurdles
Four other riders arrive in Qatar with questionable physical fitness, including Aprilia factory representative Jorge Martin. Martin attempted an early comeback at Sepang following a non-displaced fracture to his right wrist suffered at Phillip Island, but that Malaysian effort was unsuccessful, leaving him to try once more at Lusail. Trackhouse Aprilia competitor Raul Fernandez faces a similar hurdle after pulling out of the Malaysian Grand Prix during the opening laps of Free Practice because of intense pain in his right index finger, which was fractured at Mandalika. According to team manager Francesco Guidotti, Fernandez will remain in doubt until the very last moment.
Aldeguer and Mir Seek Medical Clearance
Physical setbacks also cloud the outlook for Gresini Ducati rider Fermin Aldeguer and Honda factory entrant Joan Mir. Aldeguer missed rounds at Phillip Island and Sepang after fracturing his right hand when striking out in frustration following a tumble in Indonesia, and his goal is to achieve fitness clearance for the Qatar round while Lecuona takes over Marquez's bike. For Mir, questions persist after the 2020 champion was forced to retire from Sunday's long race in Malaysia with recurring visual disturbances. Those same vision issues had already forced the Spaniard to sit out four consecutive events before his attempted comeback at Sepang.
Historical Parallels to 2010 and 2011
Should none of the four doubtful riders line up or be replaced, the Lusail grid would drop to 14 machines, matching an era record from 15 years ago. Historical records from Sky Sport note that the 2011 Australian Grand Prix featured 17 event participants that diminished to 14 starters for the race itself. Additionally, the 2010 championship experienced two separate rounds with only 15 starters, occurring at Silverstone and Assen.
