At a glance

  • Official infraction: Formally classified in the regulations as "anticipating the start".
  • Standard penalty: Two Long Lap Penalties issued during the race.
  • Governing body: Administered and applied by the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel.
  • Rider notification: Transmitted to the bike's dashboard display as `L LAP X2` with yellow lights, supported by pit wall monitors and a trackside signal board.
  • Escalation: Repeatedly ignoring the penalty leads to a ride-through penalty or an added time penalty of up to two minutes.

Under the official MotoGP jump start penalty rules, anticipating the start results in a standard penalty of two Long Lap Penalties. Formally defined in the FIM Grand Prix World Championship Regulations as "anticipating the start", the infringement is judged and penalised by the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel, requiring the rider to pass through the circuit's designated Long Lap route twice during the race.

Regulatory framework for anticipating the start

The sporting and technical framework governing MotoGP is codified in the FIM Grand Prix World Championship Regulations. Updates to championship rules are established by the Grand Prix Commission—which brings together Dorna Sports, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), the International Road Racing Teams Association (IRTA), and the Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association (MSMA). While Race Direction oversees general session operations, disciplinary decisions such as false starts are the exclusive responsibility of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel. When a rider is found to have anticipated the start, stewards enforce the standard two Long Lap Penalties across full Grand Prix races and Sprint sessions.

How the two Long Lap Penalties are served

A Long Lap Penalty requires a rider to steer off the conventional racing line and travel through an elongated asphalt route designated at each circuit. Navigating this extension adds an average of 2 to 4 seconds—typically around three seconds—to a rider's lap time, frequently causing them to lose multiple track positions. For a jump start infraction, the competitor must complete the loop on two separate laps. Knowing when and where to complete the route requires careful management, particularly around local flags and safety conditions, as detailed in our guide to the MotoGP long lap penalty under yellow flags.

Dashboard signalling and penalty escalation

Once imposed by the stewards, the penalty is communicated directly to the rider's dashboard using the text code `L LAP X2` combined with steady or flashing yellow indicator lights. The instruction is simultaneously relayed to the team via official timekeeping monitors and displayed on a trackside signal board at the start/finish straight or pre-defined penalty area. If a rider repeatedly ignores the instruction, stewards escalate the sanction to a ride-through penalty through pit lane under the 60 km/h speed limit or apply a post-race time penalty of up to two minutes, a procedure that also mirrors the outcome for unresolved last-lap Long Lap Penalties.
