MXGB Regulation Alignment for 2027
The Auto-Cycle Union will incorporate fuel testing into the MXGB series beginning in 2027 while simultaneously implementing reduced sound thresholds. This initiative forms part of the national governing body's commitment to developing national championships that prepare riders for international competition. Technical inspections will take place at randomly selected events to check compliance with FIM fuel regulations, bringing the British series into closer alignment with the technical standards applied in the sport's leading international competitions. These fuel testing measures complement ongoing efforts by the ACU to lower sound levels at motocross meetings, mirroring previous reductions established by the FIM, with the combined rules intended to provide greater consistency for riders and teams competing at British and international level.
Rider Pathways and Preparation Notice
Establishing regulatory consistency represents an important element in creating pathways through motocross. According to the ACU, riders advancing from domestic fields into European and world championship events should be able to do so with a clear understanding of the technical and sporting standards expected of them. With British competitors regularly racing on the continent, the intention is to make international requirements a familiar part of their domestic racing programme while ensuring that the national championship's regulations can be supported by testing. MXGB series manager Paul Irwin stated that the move brings the championship another step closer to the FIM World Championship, explaining that the series needs to be closely aligned when encouraging riders to progress and challenge themselves at those events. Announcing the changes well ahead of the new season also gives teams and riders time to account for fuel requirements and sound limits as they prepare their motorcycles, including mapping their engines, for 2027. Irwin added that with bikes already being prepared for the 2027 season, organizers wanted to get the announcement out early so riders and teams have time to adjust to the new requirements.
Sound Reduction Strategy and International Standards
Sound reduction sits at the centre of the planned adjustments. The ACU is working towards FIM sound limits, with fuel regulation forming part of the wider technical approach to achieving that objective. ACU technical director Andy Summers brings extensive international experience to this work, having taken part in five sound reductions worldwide. Although Summers recently stepped down as FIM technical director, he remains a member of its Technical Bureau. Explaining the motivation behind the decision, Summers stated that organizers are looking at reducing sound to achieve parity with other international competition, confirming that the national series will follow FIM sound limits.
Cross-Championship Testing Consistency
A consistent technical approach is also expected to make life easier for competitors moving between championships, allowing them to prepare around the same fuel requirements and exhaust sound levels. As Summers explained, if several riders want to run in MXGB and then at MXGP events, running on the same fuel with the same decibel level on the exhaust makes sound testing a whole lot easier.
