Sepang Frustrations and Paddock Concerns

Pramac rider Jack Miller delivered an outspoken post-race critique regarding the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix during media scrums following the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. The Australian experienced a frustrating weekend, which saw his crew fail to have his wet bike prepared during a flag-to-flag Sprint race before he finished sixteenth in Sunday's grand prix. Speaking out directly after the Sepang event, Miller revealed that 19 riders do not want to travel to the next round at Lusail, adding that multiple other paddock personnel share the same reluctance due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Safety Disputes and Sanction Warnings

Conflict surrounding the Qatar fixture had been brewing between championship organisers and the riders for some time over Qatar. Riders demanded certain guarantees, including an evacuation plan, for them to race. In response, MotoGP insisted that the race will go ahead under the safest possible conditions, while threatening sporting sanctions against riders and teams who do not travel to Qatar.

Miller Breaks Silence Despite Repercussions

However, many remained unconvinced, especially Miller, who stood up against the event to the media in Malaysia. The public stance was quite out of character, given that riders had been keeping quiet about Qatar and were careful about what to say. According to journalist Simon Patterson via The Race, Miller took a huge risk by speaking out, due to sanctions and threats fired his way from MotoGP. He did not want to put himself in a position where Pramac's position in the championship would be jeopardised.

Yamaha Confirms Lusail Withdrawal

Unbeknownst to the Australian rider as he voiced his frustrations in Malaysia, Yamaha later withdrew from the Qatar Grand Prix. The manufacturer confirmed that neither its factory outfit nor satellite partner Pramac will travel, ensuring Miller will not be present. Miller was the only one to publicly speak out about the disastrous situation in Qatar, and when no one else would, he relayed the views of most in the paddock and stood up for the riders and their safety.

Future Move and Paddock Standing

Championship organizers could have replaced Qatar with another event and avoided the mess they find themselves in, but have instead left the riders in a precarious situation. Looking beyond the current campaign, Miller will head to World Superbikes in 2027 with Yamaha to keep his career alive. MotoGP will miss his actions in openly defending his colleagues and putting their safety above anything else, as well as how he speaks his mind when others will not.
