Preparations Proceed Amid Rider Opposition
MotoGP is moving forward with its controversial push to stage the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail despite an exceptionally delicate geopolitical situation in that part of the world. The championship's effort continues in the face of direct opposition from 19 of the 22 riders on the grid, alongside the already announced absence of both the factory Yamaha team and the Pramac Racing squad. From a military standpoint, however, conditions across the surrounding territory remain far from peaceful as regional instability mounts.
Military Action in the Strait of Hormuz
On Monday, military activity intensified when the United States launched strikes targeting the Iranian island of Qeshm in the Strait of Hormuz, according to American officials who spoke to CBS. Officials from the United States characterized the action as limited, clarifying that the bombardment came in direct retaliation after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) opened fire against an American aircraft. Concurrently, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that multiple explosions had shaken the island, while it appears evident that the situation in the area is anything but tranquil.
Proximity to Regional Motorsport Venues
Geographically, Qeshm Island lies roughly 500 kilometres in a straight line from the Lusail circuit, where the motorcycle World Championship is scheduled to compete over the coming weekend—a span matching the approximate distance separating Milan and Rome to provide context regarding the scale. Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit, where Formula 1 is expected to conclude its 2026 season in one month, is situated even closer to the affected area. The extreme peril marking the overall situation was further highlighted by an additional, by no means marginal detail on Monday, when Qatar's flag carrier, Qatar Airways, announced simulated emergency response operations at Hamad International Airport (HIA) within the scope of a national exercise.
Online Backlash Over Ticket Promotions
Amid these escalating events, MotoGP sparked widespread controversy after circulating posts on its social media channels promoting ticket sales for the upcoming Lusail race weekend, drawing an immediate torrent of online criticism and insults. The overall picture therefore remains unresolved ahead of the event, with sudden turns or surprises not discounted between the present moment and the weekend, amid obvious hopes that no severe incidents unfold.
