Rival Factories Confirm Qatar Attendance

Every rival MotoGP manufacturer has confirmed plans to race in the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix following Yamaha's withdrawal over regional security concerns. While Yamaha opted out of the Lusail round after corporate leadership deemed travel to the Middle East unsafe, Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, and Honda have each confirmed they intend to take part in the event.

Yamaha Boycott Over Regional Safety Concerns

Paddock apprehension regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and whether racing at Lusail remains safe sparked debates following the Malaysian Grand Prix, when news broke that Yamaha will boycott the Qatar Grand Prix over safety concerns. The withdrawal sidelines four entries from the grid: factory riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins alongside Pramac riders Jack Miller and Augusto Fernandez. Sourced reports and journalist Simon Patterson on The Race MotoGP Podcast revealed that Yamaha corporate management in Japan deemed the situation too dangerous, with the company president personally convening the entire team in a meeting to deliver the decision after rumours had circulated all weekend. Patterson had also spoken earlier in the day with Yamaha's head of communications, who stated that internal debates were still ongoing before the final call was made. Patterson noted that team personnel in the garage subsequently expressed immense pride in their employer for prioritizing human safety above the championship.

Rider Standoff and Threat of Sanctions

The manufacturer's pullout follows several rider meetings addressing whether the round should go ahead. With nineteen riders opposed, the vast majority of the MotoGP field favored calling off the Lusail event altogether, signing a joint letter to series organizers expressing their intention not to travel. Only Marco Bezzecchi, Ai Ogura, and Johann Zarco indicated they wanted to race. However, competitors risk being forced to attend under threat of sporting sanctions from MotoGP, which could include a ban from the final two rounds of the season. Yamaha itself is likely facing a championship points deduction for staging its boycott.

Injury Wave Threatens Grid Numbers

Although Yamaha's announcement initially cast doubt on whether other factories would follow suit, Patterson reached out directly to Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, and Honda, confirming that all four intend to travel to Lusail. Even with their participation secured, grid numbers remain uncertain because of an ongoing injury crisis across the paddock. Jorge Martin and Raul Fernandez withdrew from the Malaysian round with injury and are considered unlikely to race just a week later, while Alex Marquez confirmed he will miss Qatar to undergo shoulder surgery. Gresini teammate Fermin Aldeguer has not yet been passed fit from his hand injury sustained in Indonesia, Maverick Vinales is struggling physically, and Joan Mir retired in Sepang following complications linked to an earlier illness.

Grid Depletion and Replacement Plans

These mounting injuries, combined with the four absent Yamaha machines, could reduce the starting field to as few as 12 riders in Qatar. Stand-in plans are already taking shape: Patterson reported on X that Iker Lecuona is set to ride for Gresini for a third consecutive race, though it remains unclear whether he will replace Marquez, Aldeguer, or both. Additionally, Honda is likely to field an unnamed substitute rider whom Patterson described as a new and very popular figure.
