São Paulo Grand Prix Overview and Broadcast Shift

The 2026 Formula 1 São Paulo Grand Prix takes place from November 6 to November 8 at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Interlagos, serving as the twentieth round of the world championship. A major development for Brazilian viewers is the shift in domestic broadcast rights, with coverage returning to Grupo Globo under a multi-year agreement that secures category exclusivity on the Rio de Janeiro-based network through the 2028 season, concluding a five-season run on Band. Free-to-air network TV Globo will air 15 live races across the year, including the São Paulo round, as Sunday's main race receives full nationwide coverage alongside morning and afternoon preview programming. Meanwhile, pay-television channel SporTV will broadcast all track sessions live throughout the season, retaining exclusive live coverage of Friday practice, sprint qualifying, and Saturday's sprint race, while streaming platform Globoplay mirrors the SporTV transmission for premium subscribers alongside on-demand features.

Weekend Schedule and Sprint Race Format

Track action in Brazil maintains the special sprint weekend format that ensures competitive running across each day of the event. Because the circuit routinely hosts one of the calendar's sprint rounds, competitors have a single one-hour practice session to adjust their cars before entering parc fermé conditions for the qualifying sessions. Opening track running begins on Friday, November 6, with Free Practice 1 from 11:30 to 12:30 Brasília time, offering teams their solitary opportunity to evaluate new Pirelli tyre compounds and aerodynamic configurations adjusted for local altitude before sprint qualifying sets the first grid. Competitive action resumes on Saturday, November 7, with the 100-kilometre, 24-lap sprint race scheduled from 11:00 to 12:00. The short race features no mandatory pit stops for tyre changes and awards points to the top eight finishers, ranging from eight points for the winner down to one point for eighth place under the 2026 sprint points system. Saturday concludes with main qualifying from 15:00 to 16:00, which exclusively establishes the starting grid for Sunday's Grand Prix, as the independent Saturday sprint contest does not determine Sunday's lineup.

Technical Demands, Altitude, and Power Units

Sunday's main race begins at 14:00 Brasília time on November 8, covering 71 laps of the 4,309-metre circuit. The 2026 season introduced overhauled technical regulations for aerodynamics and power units, requiring engines to operate on fully sustainable fuels while generating nearly 50 percent of their output from electrical systems. This regulatory reset disrupted established hierarchies and created opportunities for fresh podium contenders, with Lando Norris, Kimi Antonelli, and Max Verstappen featuring prominently in battles for race victories. Interlagos, situated nearly 800 metres above sea level, presents specific operational challenges for the new engines, as thinner air reduces cooling efficiency for turbochargers and electrical packages, compelling teams to open bodywork and sacrifice aerodynamic drag. The counter-clockwise layout subjects drivers to severe physical strain, while corner complexes such as Curva do Sol and the uphill Junção section place a premium on mechanical traction and rear tyre management during high spring temperatures. Key passing opportunities remain concentrated at the Senna S and the Reta Oposta, while accumulated component wear frequently triggers power unit grid penalties that teams seek to overcome on the flowing track layout.

Weather Volatility and Event Logistics

Environmental conditions and local logistics also shape the São Paulo weekend. November weather across southern São Paulo is historically volatile, with sudden mid-afternoon rain showers often altering race strategies and severely reducing track grip, particularly through the high-speed middle sector. Spectator attendance at Interlagos is traditionally at full capacity, with ticket allocations released by event organisers typically selling out months in advance. Travel recommendations highlight public transit via the Line 9-Esmeralda train to Autódromo station as the most efficient access route, while private vehicle usage is discouraged because of extensive road closures enforced by the Companhia de Engenharia de Tráfego around the circuit during the event.
