Chassis Redesign for the 2028 NTT IndyCar Series

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES will introduce the IR-28 in 2028, marking a new era of machinery for North American open-wheel racing. Redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up, the new car is lighter and faster than the previous generation. IndyCar engineered the platform to push performance limits with higher top speeds, increased on-track action, and improved driver safety.

Exterior Design and Manufacturer Branding

The IR-28 represents a striking evolution of the IndyCar design, showcasing a sleeker, more modern appearance while preserving the recognizable DNA of the series. External updates include a newly styled rear wing developed for both visual appeal and aerodynamic efficiency. A transparent engine cover window also showcases Chevrolet and Honda branding directly on the car's bodywork.

Aerodynamic Architecture and Wake Management

For the first time, IndyCar purpose-built the car's aerodynamic architecture to optimize the trailing wake and generate greater overtaking opportunities. Additional enhancements incorporate reduced outwash. These changes produce closer on-track competition by allowing cars to follow more closely through corners and race tighter throughout the field.

Indianapolis Speedway Wing and Qualifying Track Records

At Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the aerodynamic package includes a more aerodynamically stable speedway front wing. The IR-28 is engineered to eclipse current lap times and is capable of breaking track records, including at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the one-lap and four-lap qualifying records have stood since two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk set them in 1996.

2.4-Liter Twin-Turbocharged V6 Powerplant

A next-generation engine formula powers the IR-28, featuring 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 internal combustion engines capable of producing up to 760 horsepower. Compared to the current generation of NTT INDYCAR SERIES engines, this revised powerplant delivers increased torque, greater peak power, and enhanced overall performance across competition.

Evolved Low-Voltage Hybrid Powertrain

Paired alongside the internal combustion engine is an evolved low-voltage hybrid system. This electrical package provides greater energy storage and expanded deployment options for drivers. Despite the increased capability, the new hybrid package is approximately 20 pounds lighter than the current NTT INDYCAR SERIES power unit.

For a technical comparison with Grand Prix electrification, readers can consult our explainer on the 2026 F1 Power Unit: How Its Energy Systems Work, which details Formula 1's distinct hybrid regulations.

Integrated Monocoque Safety Architecture

Safety improvements form a central element of the redesign, creating the safest monocoque in INDYCAR history. Re-engineered from the ground up, the new chassis seamlessly integrates safety advancements into its core architecture, including the aeroscreen, roll hoop, and side-impact structures. Built to exceed INDYCAR or FIA standards, whichever is more stringent, the IR-28 provides measurable safety improvements over the current car.

Cockpit Ergonomics and Driver Cooling

The chassis incorporates a wider cockpit designed to accommodate a broader range of driver heights and body types comfortably. Alongside the expanded interior space, enhanced airflow and an improved cooling system provide greater comfort and performance behind the wheel during demanding race conditions.

Side-Impact Absorption and Grounded Stability

Built on decades of race data and incident analysis, the chassis features stronger, more efficient side-impact structures that increase energy absorption during high-impact crashes. Additionally, the IR-28 is engineered for improved stability, with a natural tendency to remain grounded during nose-up, sliding, and spinning incidents.
