Comparing Formula 1 Win Rates Across Eras

Evaluating driver performance across different Formula 1 eras involves numerous caveats, asterisks, and exceptions. Win percentages can serve to level the playing field somewhat across generations. Lewis Hamilton has won the highest number of Formula 1 races, but the talent of past champions cannot be discounted as the championship expands beyond its early roots.

Two American drivers achieved high rates but are omitted from this ranking. Lee Wallard recorded a 50 percent win rate and Bill Vukovich reached 40 percent. Neither driver competed in a European Grand Prix, triumphing instead at the Indianapolis 500 while that race featured on the Formula 1 calendar between 1950 and 1960.

10. Stirling Moss (24.24%)

Stirling Moss stands among motorsport's greatest figures and won a quarter of the 66 Grands Prix he entered, without celebrating World Championship glory. In a ten-year Formula 1 career driving for teams including Mercedes, Maserati, and Lotus, Moss finished the championship season in second place four times, alongside a further four bronze medals.

The British icon passed away at age 90 in 2020 after competing on track against legends such as Juan Manuel Fangio and Jack Brabham. Moss is often considered the greatest driver without a World Championship title, holding a 24.24 percent win rate across his starts.

9. Ayrton Senna (25.47%)

Ayrton Senna claimed three World Championships and 41 victories across a ten-year career before his fatal accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. The Brazilian driver won more than one out of every four races he entered. He ranks fifth in total victories despite competing during seasons with significantly fewer rounds than modern schedules.

8. Alain Prost (25.63%)

Alain Prost recorded 51 victories from 199 Grand Prix starts, securing four World Championships during his career. He drove for leading teams including McLaren, Renault, Ferrari, and Williams. Prost engaged in an intense rivalry with Senna, and collisions at the final round decided two separate championship battles between the competitors.

7. Lewis Hamilton (26.63%)

Lewis Hamilton spearheaded Mercedes during an era of hybrid dominance, collecting race victories across consecutive campaigns. After his breakout debut with McLaren in 2007, Hamilton won at least one Grand Prix each season until 2022. That campaign marked the first year of his Formula 1 career without a race win.

Hamilton surpassed Michael Schumacher's total win tally in 2020, becoming the first driver to reach 100 Grand Prix victories. He reached 104 total wins after securing first place at the 2024 British Grand Prix. Hamilton has shown no intention of stepping away from racing.

6. Jackie Stewart (27.27%)

Jackie Stewart walked away from Formula 1 with the World Championship at age 34, choosing to end his career at the top. Stewart cited the extreme risks associated with racing in the 1960s and 1970s as his reason for retiring, subsequently lobbying successfully for significant safety upgrades.

Aware of those hazards, the Scottish driver piloted the cars of his era to three Championships inside five years. Stewart concluded his racing career with 27 victories from 99 races as the standout talent of his generation, establishing a 27.27 percent win rate.

5. Max Verstappen (29.08%)

Max Verstappen entered Formula 1 at age 17 and set numerous statistical benchmarks. His position on the win percentage list advanced significantly during the 2022 season, when he won 15 of 22 Grands Prix. That single campaign almost doubled his aggregate win total from the previous five seasons combined.

Verstappen captured a third World Championship in 2023, establishing a record streak of 10 consecutive Grand Prix wins. In early 2024, a victory in Saudi Arabia moved his career percentage above Schumacher. A subsequent triumph at Imola elevated his win percentage beyond Hamilton.

4. Michael Schumacher (29.64%)

Michael Schumacher earned 19 Formula 1 victories and two titles with Benetton before joining Ferrari. The German driver's partnership with the Scuderia brought five World titles, rewriting historical records. Schumacher was unconcerned with statistics when he returned to Formula 1 following a three-year hiatus in 2010, driving for Mercedes before retiring again in 2012.

Schumacher competed in 58 winless Grands Prix during his Mercedes comeback. Without those races, his victory rate would have reached 36.55 percent instead of his final 29.64 percent mark. Following a skiing accident one year after his 2012 retirement, Schumacher has not appeared in public, with his health status remaining a closely guarded secret.

3. Jim Clark (34.72%)

Jim Clark achieved 25 Grand Prix victories from 72 starts during nine seasons with Team Lotus, recording a 34.72 percent victory rate. The Scottish driver captured his first title in 1963 by winning seven of ten rounds, then claimed a second crown two years later. Clark won races across seven consecutive seasons before his death at age 32 during a 1968 Formula 2 event at Hockenheim.

2. Alberto Ascari (40.63%)

Alberto Ascari entered the inaugural 1950 Monaco Grand Prix and became a central figure for Ferrari in early championship history. During the 1952 campaign, he missed Switzerland and retired from Indianapolis before winning the remaining six consecutive rounds. Ascari defended his title against Fangio in 1953, recording 13 wins across 32 starts, with 10 retirements, before dying at Monza in 1955.

1. Juan Manuel Fangio (47.06%)

Juan Manuel Fangio leads all Formula 1 drivers with a 47.06 percent win rate, taking nearly a victory every other Grand Prix. Across 52 starts between 1950 and 1958, the Argentine driver claimed 24 wins, five World Championships, and two second-place championship finishes. Jackie Stewart is among the past greats who describe Fangio as the sport's greatest driver.

Fangio began his racing career in 1936 and was 39 years old when the World Championship began in 1950. He became Formula 1's oldest title winner at age 46, ranking alongside Stirling Moss among the championship's top ten by win percentage while dominating the opening decade of the sport.
