At a glance

  • Drivers without a Q3 time are grouped by their activity in Q3, then ordered within each group by their Q2 classification.
  • Equal valid lap times are a different case: the driver who set the time first ranks ahead.
  • The qualifying classification comes before grid penalties and pit-lane-start decisions.

No Q3 time: which driver ranks ahead?

Q2 order is not the first test. Under the 2026 FIA Sporting Regulations, Section B, Issue 09, Article B2.4.3(a)(v), drivers who fail to set a Q2 or Q3 time are divided into activity groups.

Priority Activity in the segment without a time Order within that group
1 Started a flying lap Previous segment’s classification
2 Did not start a flying lap Previous segment’s classification
3 Did not leave the pits Previous segment’s classification

For Q3, the previous segment is Q2. For Q2, it is Q1. A driver in the first group therefore ranks ahead of one who stayed in the garage, even if the garage-bound driver was faster in Q2.

A simple example

Imagine Driver A qualified seventh in Q2 but stayed in the garage throughout Q3. Driver B was tenth in Q2 and started a Q3 flying lap without recording a valid time. B takes priority over A because the Q3 activity group is decided first. If both belonged to the same group, their Q2 classification would put A ahead.

This is an example of applying the hierarchy, not a report of a particular Grand Prix.

Equal times and drivers without a qualifying classification

For identical valid times, B2.4.3(a)(iv) gives priority to the earlier lap. No-time Q1 cases have separate classification and participation provisions, including the applicable 107% test and stewards’ permission. They should not be handled by inventing an earlier-session time that does not exist.

The 2026 format

Segment Duration Eligible cars in the 22-car format Eliminated
Q1 18 minutes 22 6
Q2 15 minutes 16 6
Q3 13 minutes 10 None

These figures follow B2.4.2. The historical 20-car format had different elimination numbers and a 12-minute Q3; it should not be mixed into a 2026 table.

Finally, consult the published starting grid. Qualifying rank and the final race grid are different records. Component penalties, other sanctions and pit-lane starts can alter where a car begins the race. Our weekend-format guide explains the session sequence.
