Title Triumph in Mexico City
Andrea Kimi Antonelli has rewritten Formula 1 history by securing the 2026 Drivers' Championship at 20 years, two months, and seven days old, surpassing the benchmark set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010. The Mercedes driver claimed his maiden title on Sunday, 1 November 2026, by finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Crossing the line behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton gave Antonelli an unassailable points buffer with four Grands Prix remaining, concluding a 73-year wait for an Italian champion since Alberto Ascari took his second crown in 1953.
Surpassing Sebastian Vettel's Record
Antonelli entered the Mexican round needing only a top-nine result to clinch the championship regardless of where his closest pursuers, George Russell and Hamilton, finished. Starting from fourth on the grid following post-qualifying penalties, his run to the podium completed an extraordinary second campaign in the sport, as covered when Antonelli becomes youngest F1 champion as Verstappen wins in Mexico. In doing so, the Bologna-born driver shattered Vettel's previous record of 23 years and 134 days—achieved with Red Bull in 2010—by more than three years, making Antonelli the first competitor to capture the world title before turning 21.
Early Karting and Mercedes Support
Born on 25 August 2006, Antonelli was introduced to motorsport early through his father, Marco Antonelli, a former driver and racing team owner. In an interview with the BBC, Marco recalled placing his then ten-year-old son in a Lamborghini at an Italian circuit, with the elder Antonelli operating the pedals while Kimi handled the steering. Antonelli had already begun karting at age five, later collecting two FIA European titles in the OK category. Mercedes recruited him into its junior programme in April 2019 at 12 years of age, providing crucial backing to continue his progression through the junior categories.
Rapid Ascent Through the Ranks
His ascent through single-seaters proved rapid. Driving for Prema Racing in 2022, Antonelli secured both the Italian and German Formula 4 championships before capturing the Formula Regional Middle East and Formula Regional European titles in 2023. Mercedes subsequently promoted him straight to Formula 2 for 2024 without contesting Formula 3. After winning twice during his F2 campaign, the manufacturer chose Antonelli to succeed Ferrari-bound Hamilton for 2025. Partnered with Russell, his 18-year-old debut season featured three podiums and a sprint pole position.
Championship Year and Senna Tribute
Antonelli transformed that promise into sustained dominance during 2026. He scored his first Grand Prix win from pole position in China, initiated a five-race victory streak that included Monaco, and collected his ninth victory of the year at Austin just one week prior to Mexico. Carrying car number 12—a number he kept from Formula 4 out of admiration for childhood idol Ayrton Senna, who won his first championship in 1988 with the same number—Antonelli has established a historic milestone in modern grand prix racing.
