Declan Fraser will replace Tommy Smith at Matt Stone Racing for the Super2 Series round at the Sandown 500. Smith is expected to move to Ford team Anderson Motorsport to test Ford machinery with another Super2 outfit. Despite stepping aside from MSR's Super2 entry, Smith will remain part of the Matt Stone Racing fold via the National Trans Am Series, where the squad looks forward to continuing to work with him in TA2 and finishing the season strongly together.
Matt Stone on Driver Transition
Stone thanked Smith for his efforts with MSR and wished him all the best as he takes on the new opportunity to test out Ford machinery with another Super2 team. Stone noted that it was great that Fraser was able to step in with such short notice, adding that the driver has a lot of experience and no doubt will be a great addition, and that MSR looks forward to having him onboard at Sandown.
Second Outing in a Week for Fraser
The call-up gives Fraser his second competitive outing in a week following his departure from PremiAir Racing. The previous week, Fraser made his Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia debut at Sandown.
Fraser's Outlook on Sandown Round
Fraser stated that he felt extremely privileged to have received the call from Stone and the team at MSR saying they need a driver for the weekend, remarking that the racer in him does not need to be asked twice. Noting that the team has shown promise this year, he expressed hope to bring his enthusiasm and experience to the weekend to achieve a result for all the hard work MSR puts in. Fraser explained that while the competitor in him wants to go out there to win with the opportunity given, the reality is that the squad will not know where they are at until getting into the first phases of the weekend to see what pace they have. He added that he cannot wait to work with the team's engineers to try to extract speed and turn that into results.
Return to Super2 and ZB Commodore
The Sandown start will be the first time since the 2022 Bathurst 1000 that Fraser has raced a Holden ZB Commodore, as well as his first appearance in the Super2 Series since 2022. Fraser explained that he is familiar with the ZB from his time in the Triple Eight wildcard alongside Craig Lowndes at the Bathurst 1000, expressing that he loves the car and describing the weekend as a bit of a homecoming of sorts.
