Jake Dixon could receive a fresh opportunity to compete in MotoGP at this weekend's Qatar Grand Prix in Lusail, where the 30-year-old British rider is in line to replace Joan Mir at the factory Honda team alongside Luca Marini, according to reporting by The Race. While official confirmation has not yet been issued, Mir's prospective absence is expected to pave the way for Dixon to make a temporary return to the Grand Prix paddock and take the handlebars of the Honda RC213V.
Mir Sidelined After Recurring Physical Issues at Sepang
Mir's availability for the round in Qatar has been cast into doubt after physical issues forced him out of the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. The Majorcan competitor had returned to competition in Malaysia following an absence of four races brought on by health problems, but the physical ailments that troubled him across the season resurfaced during Sunday's race. Explaining his retirement after the event, Mir stated that he started experiencing dizziness around lap 9 and felt unable to retain complete control of the situation, prompting him to stop. Mir may now skip the journey to Qatar so that he can remain focused on his physical recovery.
Dixon's Grand Prix Background and Disrupted Campaign
Should the substitution materialize, Dixon would step back into a familiar environment after spending seven seasons contesting the Moto2 World Championship. The Briton previously entered two premier-class rounds in 2021 when he deputised for Franco Morbidelli at the Silverstone and Aragon Grands Prix. Dixon moved into the Superbike World Championship this season, also competing under the Honda banner, though his campaign has been heavily disrupted. A severe crash during pre-season testing at Phillip Island left him with a wrist injury that sidelined him for a major portion of this year's calendar.
