Reported Discussions Over Possible Majority Shareholding
Two days after reports from Sportico regarding a possible sale of the American outfit, The Guardian reported that Fenway Sports Group, the sports investment entity led by John Henry that owns Liverpool FC, has emerged as a suitor in discussions to potentially acquire a majority stake in Cadillac F1. According to the British daily, the prospective transaction could exceed two billion pounds sterling, identifying a prominent contender following reports that the squad could be sold. This account draws on paddock-gp.com reporting.
Valuation Estimates and Identified Investor Interest
The development follows reporting published on November 2 by Sportico, which indicated that American businessman Mark Walter was exploring a potential sale of his holding in the squad through TWG Global. Sportico reported that the team held an estimated valuation reaching at least three billion dollars, attracting interest from seven prospective investors. In addition to The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal subsequently reported the existence of discussions involving multiple prospective buyers.
Cadillac Debut Season and Formula 1 Commercial Expansion
Cadillac is currently contesting its debut season in Formula 1 with drivers Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas. On the track, the operation has experienced a difficult start, sitting in last place in the constructors' championship without having scored a point. Despite those sporting struggles, commercial appetite for entry slots remains substantial, propelled by championship revenue growth since Liberty Media acquired Formula 1 in 2017, a period over which annual series revenues have more than doubled while available grid places have become extremely rare.
Fenway Sports Group Portfolio and Asset Realignment
Fenway Sports Group maintains an established presence across professional athletics, controlling Liverpool FC, Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, and the Pittsburgh Penguins in ice hockey. FSG also possesses an existing motorsport footprint through its 50 percent ownership of NASCAR outfit RFK Racing. The organization adjusted its holdings this summer by selling a 38 percent stake in Liverpool FC to a consortium that includes Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, a transaction that granted the consortium an option to take control of the football club before August 2027. While The Guardian reported that FSG aims to pursue further sports investments, there is no proof that the partial sale of Liverpool was organized specifically to finance an acquisition of Cadillac.
Ownership Context and Corporate Inquiries
The reported talks occur alongside financial complexities for Walter, who recently conducted several transactions involving his sports assets, including holdings in the Los Angeles Lakers and Chelsea FC. Concurrently, select financial activities within his corporate group are subject to federal investigations in the United States regarding transactions between affiliated companies. TWG Global has contested all allegations of fraud, and Cadillac F1 is not directly accused of irregularity in the matter. Although TWG Global asserted in August that it was not considering selling its stake in the team, recent reports point to ongoing discussions with multiple investors.
Manufacturer Ties and Operational Status
Any prospective transaction would also involve General Motors, the American automotive manufacturer and industrial partner in the project. The precise equity distribution between TWG Global and General Motors has not been made public, meaning it would be premature to assert that FSG could take full control of the team, and a potential sale of TWG's holding would not automatically mean the disappearance of the Cadillac brand. For Marcin Budkowski, who is tasked with guiding the team's sporting development, the priority remains guaranteeing investment continuity. At present, nothing has been signed, with FSG not publicly confirming an intention to buy Cadillac, TWG Global announcing no sale, and the definitive valuation of any eventual deal remaining unknown.
