Sunday track activity at the Red Bull Grand Prix of Australia was delayed due to reduced visibility affecting the medical helicopter's ability to fly at Phillip Island.
Schedule Impact and Resumption Window
In their initial official announcement, event organisers stated that track action would be delayed until conditions improved, with an expectation that running could potentially begin around 11:00 local time. That target was an estimated window at the time of the announcement rather than a confirmed restart time, with officials confirming that further updates would follow via motogp.com and championship social media channels. Whenever track running is cleared to begin, the 10-minute MotoGP Warm Up is scheduled as the first session on circuit.
FIM Medical Transport Regulations
A medical evacuation helicopter is normally required under Article 5.3.12 of the FIM Grand Prix World Championship Regulations. Under the rules, the aircraft must be fully equipped with adequate personnel and equipment, appropriately licensed for the relevant country, and flown by an experienced pilot familiar with medical air evacuation and potential landing sites. In addition, regulations specify that medical personnel should be qualified in and able to carry out emergency treatment and resuscitation, and the aircraft should be designed to allow continuing resuscitation during transit. The helicopter should also be positioned close to the medical centre so that an ambulance journey between the medical centre and the helicopter is not necessary. Regulatory guidance further provides that the designated hospital should normally be within 20 minutes by air, with a recommendation that two helicopters be available during the event.
Conditions for Road Transfer Alternatives
When adverse weather conditions or other factors prevent the use of the helicopter, racing cannot automatically proceed. Under Article 5.3.12(c), patient transfers may be undertaken by road by emergency ambulance after consultation between the Chief Medical Officer, the Medical Director, and the FIM Medical Officer, providing the hospital is in reasonable distance. Regulatory guidance notes that the designated hospital should normally be within 45 minutes by road. If the hospital is not within a reasonable distance and helicopter transfer is not possible, consideration should be given to stopping the event. The official event announcement does not confirm whether an alternative road transfer arrangement was authorised; the absence of information does not establish whether officials approved or refused such an option.
